People read too much into it, he just meant they wouldnt meat again, wouldnt see each other again, since he was about to die. :|

Long ago when Itachi and Sasuke were close brothers, Itachi use to say "Sorry Sasuke, maybe next time" when he didn't have time to spend with his little brother.

After their final battle Itachi changed it to "Sorry Sasuke, there is no next time(or the other version "Sorry Sasuke, This is it") Knowing that this would be is final time seeing Sasuke again alive, he wanted to leave Sasuke a momento to remember him by as his older brother that cared for him long ago.
