Ah, thanks again for providing evidence, YAMA. I did some searching just to be sure, and I came across something on Narutopedia that pretty much proves that the third coffin did indeed contain the Fourth's body, not Madara's or anyone else.

In chapter 117 of the manga, when Orochimaru first performs the technique, he tries to summon a third coffin. When the coffin is not summoned, he comments on its failure. Years later, in chapter 520, Kabuto explains that Orochimaru's attempt to summon the Fourth Hokage had failed due to his soul not residing in the "pure world". In episode 69 of the anime, when Orochimaru used this technique, the coffin briefly appears, with "four" (四, Yon) written on it; though the summoning of the Fourth Hokage still fails.

In the Anime, it appears that the 3rd Hokage wasn't aware of the fact that Minato's soul didn't reside in the 'Pure World', hence the reason why the summoning failed - he still thought he was responsible for stopping it via his Shuriken Shadow Clone Justu.

Ah, thanks again for providing evidence, YAMA. I did some searching just to be sure, and I came across something on Narutopedia that pretty much proves that the third coffin did indeed contain the Fourth's body, not Madara's or anyone else.

There's also a mistake. Kishi made it look like Hiruzen stopped the final summon, but later Kabuto says that it failed, because Minato's soul is sealed.

Ah, thanks for providing that explanation, I can now see why soo many people believe it was Madara instead of the Fourth; I'm not sure if those who read the manga also watch the anime, but in the latter, during Orochimaru's summoning, the third coffin reaches the surface, along with the other two, and remains there long enough that you can make out the kanji, 四, (Yon) - which represents four, before it was stopped and disappeared. So even though the Kanji wasn't shown in the manga, I think Kishimoto meant for it to contain the Fourth's body; otherwise, there's a serious discrepancy between the anime and manga when it comes to this episode.

I can see an explanation for why people would think it's Madara...But how do you STILL think it's madara even with Kabuto saying it's the 4th?

The third coffin contained the 4 hokage but the third hokage destroyed it because the knew the 4 hokage was in it anjd the 4 is the most powerful hokage

I don't think it was the 4th, in the manga the coffin never reaches the surface..we all assumed it was the 4th because of the anime but now I think it was Madara because the 3rd knew Minato was sealed in Deaths belly so he wouldn't of panicked to stop it because it wasnt gonna work anyway..I think he knew it was Madara and knew if Oro summoned Madara there was no way of him beating that beast + the other 2, it makes more sense anyway because 1st 2nd and Madara all founded the village togather and are from the same time, also explains how Kabuto came across Madara to begin with, from Oro..he can't summon the other 2 because of the 3rd sealing them but Madara was never brought back and wasn't sealed..when Tobi asked Kabuto how he got ahold of that all Kabuto said was "I have my ways"

I can see your point, but the only assumption that can me made in reference to this was that even though Hiruzen may have known that the Fourth's soul had been sealed, he may not have known that due to the sealing, Minato's soul no longer resided in the 'Pure World', which is necessary in order for the summoning to be successful; in other words, while he may have been familiar with Edo Tensei, He might not of known everything regarding the summoning requirements, hence his haste in 'attempting' to stop the third coffin, even though he knew Minato's soul was sealed already.

And Yama makes an excellent point; Tobi had already seen Madara's body, so there's no point in Kabuto lying.

In no way did this prove that it was the fourth because it says his attempt to summon the fourth failed AND during the crush the leaf plan the third used the same seal to seal away the first and second thats just to explain the reason why he could not summon the fourth and you have to remember the reanimation jutsu does not start in a coffin they go into it after they are summoned with reanimation SO i am sure he tryed to summon the fourth back at his lair and failed possibly attempting to crush the leaf with 4 reanimated characters the third coffin contained Mardara who orochi had at the time so there would be no reason why he wouldn't try to summon him with his crush the leaf plan.

Based on Kabuto's demonstration, it would seem the actual failure would have occurred when Orochimaru performed the original preparatory ritual///// thats from the link further proving my point that he prolly found out he could not summon the fourth back at his lair.

And on this subject there was no cause for kabuto to lie about madara yes i agree but, there is a reason to lie about a soul that is sealed not being able to be summoned back with edo tensai the reason being idk kabuto wanting a trump card vs tobi and remember the manga is not over and kabuto is not dead there could be a really cool twist to how obito and madara get ther asses whooped or say is they do succeed in getting the ten tails back and neither of them being able to control it kabuto becoming good and summoning ALL previous hokage to win vs the ten tails would also be a possible twist to the manga ALL IS POSSIBLE NOW
