Byakugan is stronger and more useful than the initial 3-tomoe Sharingan.
-It can see the hundreds of tenketsu that control the flow of chakra
-It grants 360 degree vision
-It grants long-ranged vision
-It allows the user to see through solid objects
-It allows the user to see through genjutsu by observing the flow of chakra itself.
This all changed with the introduction of the Mangekyou Sharingan.
No it was true that the sharingan was greater than the byakugan when we saw all that the 3-tomoe could do verses Sasuke's 2-tomoe sharingan that we only saw for most of part I

-copies any ninjutsu, taijutsu and gentjutsu that isn't a KG
-sees chakra
-track and follow the fast opponent
-predict a person's every next move before they make it
-cast gentjutsu in an instant w/o hand seals
-reflect a genjutsu done to you back at the original caster
-increases your speed dramatically when copying extreme taijutsu like speeds
-copy another's signature which comes in handy when either cheating on a test or forging notes
