The rinnegan and sharingan have different abilities. If I were to pick a set of eyes it would definitely be one of each. Unless you are like Madara and can switch back and forth.

The reason I think they would be the perfect pair is this, the sharingan can track movement speed better than anything else. It can also predict taijutsu moves and where the opponent will be, and finally it can copy any jutsu it sees (non-KG).

The rinnegan allows you to use all elements and any jutsu without prerequisites, but you still have to learn the jutsu. This is opposed to the sharingan where you need to have the prerequisites (skill in that area) before you can use a jutsu but you automatically learn it.

So if you had both you could automatically use any jutsu you see as long as it is non-KG.
How awesome is that? And with the rinnegan's shared vision with paths and the sharingan's ability to track speed and predict movement it means you will almost never take a hit unless you are retarded.

Easily the best combo ever. Two rinnegans doesn't even compare (again unless you are Madara who has both the sharingan and rinnegan and can switch between them).

this is just an addition to itachi namikaze's explanation:

one more useful thing that a sharingan holds is that it can be used as a sacrifice for the izanagi technique which allows the user to escape death...

it would be a great combination of offense and defense for tobi...

and as i've said a last resort of defense like izanagi would save tobi's ass for good....

And the So6P was most likely the last shinobi to truly unlock the true potentional of the Rinnegan as Madara. Had Madara had more time with his new doujutsu before dying, he would've easly become the next So6P.

My question is would the Sage have possessed Sharingan Techs as Madara? Seeing the sharingan is a quite effective weapon that Tobi would rather keep one to bolster his Rinnegan's power, the Sage would've made great use of its techs as well. Thoughts?

I don't think the Sage had sharingan techniques. The sharingan descended from the rinnegan so that would mean that those techniques came after he had died/ Like the Hyuuga and the Byakugan which fits somewhere in there, if it came from the sharingan then the sharingan wouldn't have any jutsus that the byakugan has or visa versa.

I could be wrong though and the doujutsu just became weaker over time instead of actually changing. Like instead of it being completely different, the sharingan just got less and less rinnegan abilities over time until it became what it is. Although that doesn't make sense because the rinnegan doesn't track speed or predict taijutsu moves. So something new had to happen along the line.

So I am not sure, it would have made him even more ultra powerful but who knows? Kishi would have to actually define the time-line and the set abilities down that line for us to know if the sage had them. Good thought though!
