Chapter 2: Team Kankuro
Genin Training Arc
As the morning rolls over, the day for genin orientation arrives for the graduates. Koichi remains asleep, snoring like a walrus, in his underwear. His room flooded with dirty cloths, food containers, and scrolls.
“I wonder which one of our parents he get's it from” Koji sighs. “Wake up we're going to be late.” Koji throws book at his brother's head and he smacks it away. Koji sighs again, taking a kunai, twirling it casually in his finger. “I said get up you idiot.” He throws the kunai and Koichi opens his eyes and flips off his bad as the kunai clips a piece of his hair. Koichi looks at his little brother with a pestered shock.
“You idiot you could have killed me!” He yelled.
“Well obviously you weren't asleep or else you wouldn't have been able to smack away that book. I don't like being ignored you know.”
“What if it was muscle memory huh?! What if I was asleep and I smacked it away by reflex?” He said annoyed.
“Well then you shouldn't have had any problems with the knife should you?” Koji mocks, “Now get up, we're late enough as it is.”
“Jeez you're so annoying.” Koichi complains. Koji walks to an empty room and stands in the doorway. The sight is desolate with with nothing inside except a bed and a dresser with elegant flowers in a vase. Koji stands there with a heartbroken expression on his face as stares into the emptiness. “Yo.” Koji turns to see his brother peeking out of his room with a reassuring smile. “You already said we were late, get moving.” Koichi says with tenderness. Koji smiles and pass the room, heading down the hall to his room. The apartment is silent and plain, no distinguishing items, no color, no items out of the ordinary. It was a simple home with nothing inside except two 12-year-old children.
As Koji finally comes out of his room with his sand brown robe on, Koichi stands at the front door waiting. “Ready to go Koji?” Koichi asks. Koji nods his head and the two young shinobi leave their home. “Damn this storm, it hasn't let up in over a week.”
The two brothers make their way through the harsh storm and into the academy. They see the rest of their graduating classmates inside the homeroom for the orientation. As the two walk in the room, many whispers begin to replace the rampant loud chatter. To the left of the children, the academy grades and rank postings are sited on the blackboard. Next to the category of number one is the name “Ryoko Taiyou”. Next the category of two are the names “Koichi Shichiyo and Koji Shichiyo”. Koichi smiles as he sees him and his brother's name at the tops of the list.
“Look who's name they put first Koji-kun.” Koichi says, teasingly.
“Moron, the only reason your name is before mine is because the names are in alphabetical order. We both got the same overall average.”
“But remember who won that fight last week little brother.”
“Remember who ran into a tree because he couldn't even break out of a D-ranked genjutsu, Ni-san.” Koji says mockingly as he walks to his seat. Koichi frowns and follows. “You're genjutsu is atrocious Ni-san, unlike I, who was able to release chuunin level genjutsu and already knows how to cast basic illusions.”
“Don't break your arm patting yourself on the back.” Koichi says annoyed. After several minutes of waiting in the room, the head chuunin instructor for the academy enters the room and calls everybody to attention.
“Alright everybody listen up. Starting today you will be placed on three man squads and you shall work as a team under a new jounin sensei.” The kids began whispering again, and the topics of the conversation were who would be chosen to be on Koichi, Koji, and Ryoko's team. The whispers weren't discrete however, the object of conversation conversation was obvious to anybody with a working set of ears. “Quiet down everyone...the teams have already been picked. Genin Squad 1 will be: Koichi and Koji Shichiyo and Ryoko Taiyou.” The whispers of curiosity quickly turned into sighs of disappointment. “Genin Squad 2 will be: Temari Nara, Pakura, and Jo Shirogane.” The three named genin look at each other and their new team, “Genin Squad 3 will be: Masaomi Iga, Koga, and Shizuko.” The other three genin look at each other as well, witnessing their new team.
The instructor continues to rattle off names and squads for the newly appointed genin and once all 25 teams have been set, the instructor makes his final lecture. “Alright everybody, now that we've settled the teams I must now relay to you what your first task will be.” The room of small shinobi pay studious attention to the tone of their sensei. “You will be placed under the guidance of a jounin instructor and before you start your careers as shinobi you must go through a test generated by that jounin.”
“A test?! I thought we were done with all that crap.” Koichi exclaimed. “Why the hell would we have to do more tests if we're already shinobi?”
“That's the thing, you guys aren't officially shinobi yet.” The instructor says hesitantly, knowing the reaction he's going to get from his students. Just as he suspected, the students looke upon him with shock and annoyance, especially Koichi.
“What?! Of course we're shinobi, we graduated from the academy, we passed the requirements needed why the hell wouldn't we be shinobi?!” Koichi said annoyed.
“Well, you see the graduation exams are only to move you forward as candidates for shinobi. The tests you go through with the jounin is supposed to be hands on experience, which tests how you apply what you've learned”
“So, this means that the jounin decides whether we become shinobi or not.” Koji comments. The instructor nods his head and the rest of the class display fearful and worrying looks on their faces. “What happens if we fail?” Koji asks curiously. All eyes turn towards the instructor as he sighs.
“Well there's two options if you fail the exam your instructors give you. They could either send you back to the academy for further training, or...” The pause in his statement demonstrates the arrival of a much heavier consequence. “You could be dropped from the shinobi program and you'll never be allowed to become a ninja.”
Koichi slams his hands on the desk and stands up angrily. “They can't do that!” Koichi complains.
“Sit down.” Koji says as he yanks his brother's collar. “There shouldn't be a need for that if we do everything right, so I don't know why everybody is so stressed. We all met the qualifications of becoming shinobi, we were taught what we needed and now we have to apply it. Most of us should be able to accomplish this.” The others look at Koji's calm demeanor, however, it only calms few as they realize the words are coming out of the mouth of the second top ranked graduate.
“Koji is right, how you do all depends on how much you've retained during your time here. We're going to break for lunch and after you will report to your new sensei. With everything set and done, you're all dismissed.”
As the children leave with anxious worry in their bodies, Koichi and Koji head to the training hall of the academy, in preparation for their sensei. “This sucks!” Koichi yells down the empty hallway.
“Why are you complaining, do you honestly think we're going to fail?” Koji asks curiously.
“That's not the point, everybody did their damnedest to pass these exams and now they tell us that we could be sent back to the academy, or worse, dropped out of the program. Everybody who has passed that exam has the right to serve this village and the country as shinobi, but at a whim they could be denied that right.” Koichi says, his words speaking from the heart, the heart of a true patriot for his village and people. Koji doesn't say anything as his brother's rarely serious expression brings him to worry as well.
As the two brothers travel further down the hall they begin to hear the faint tapping and towards the end of the hall. As they enter the training room they see Ryoko throwing kunai and shuriken at practice dummies. “YO!” Koichi yells down. The girl turns her head, looking at the two boys plainly and she turns around and continues her training. “You know you could say hi back you know.” Koichi says annoyed at her silence.
“What do you want?” Ryoko says without turning back to them.
“Well for starters, we came here to train but since you're here too we could hang out and get to know each other. I mean we are teammates after all.” Koichi grins.
“No thanks.” Ryoko says.
“Geez, what's your problem?! As long as I've known you, you've always been so uptight, you never hang out with anybody or do anything. How the hell do you expect to be on a team with people if you don't know how to--” before he could finish his sentence, a knife goes flying towards Koichi's face. The tip of the blade just touches his forehead as Koji's hand holds the handle of the blade. “You crazy bitch! You could have killed me.”
“Lets get one thing straight here. I have no intentions of being your friend or getting to know you. As far as I'm concerned you're just going to hold me back and I won't let that happen. Just stay out of my way and let me do me. I don't need a team, but since the rules says we have to, just try to keep up.” Ryoko says.
“You think you're better then me.” Koichi says cynically. “Lets test it then!” Ryoko shifts her eyes up towards Koichi and slides a hidden blade from her sleeve, as she begins to turn to throw the blade, a hand is placed on her wrist. “Man you're slow.” Ryoko's eyes light up with shock as she hears Koichi's voice from behind her, not only that, but his breath touches her neck, making the hairs on her neck stand up. As she turns her head behind her a blade waits for her at her forehead. A hand holds the writs of Koichi, as the two both look down and see Koji, knelt down between them. Koji kicks Koichi in the stomach, releasing his grip on Ryoko's had and knocking him on his back. “Idiot, I wasn't going to actually kill her!”
“It would've caught her carotid artery had I not moved your hand up, you're accuracy when it comes to control sucks. Sorry Ryoko, we'll get out of your hair.” Koji says as he drags his brother by his collar.
“You're just as uptight as—”
“Don't you ever do that again!” Koji bursts at his brother with seriousness. “Don't you ever come that close to hurting her again.”
“Alright chill...” Koichi says defensively. The seriousness of his younger brother's normally calm tone, shocks and confuses Koichi.
Ryoko still stands in aw as to the situation that just happened. “*So fast...both of them.*” She turns her attention to Koichi as the two brothers continue out of the training hall. “*He could have stopped my kunai earlier but he didn't.*” She drops to her knees and clinches her fists in self focused disappointment.
“Damn, is that what I really have to work with?” Kankuro says to himself, hidden at the other end of the training hall. He sighs and walks away. “Team Kankuro is going to be such a drag...damn I'm starting to sound like Shikamaru.”
