Interesting article on Yahoo:

Apparently Russia and Japan are working to clone a Woolly Mammoth from DNA extracted from a preserved thigh bone, and it could be done within the next 5 years. Pretty incredible to think we can bring back a species that has gone extinct. Jurassic Park coming to life before our eyes.

But it brings up an interesting questions, should we do something just because we can? While it certainly would be cool to see a living breathing Woolly Mammoth, is it really necessary? What advantage/advancement does it bring for the scientific community?

So my question: Is cloning extinct animals worth it?

Yay so that means in 8 years the world will end by a stampede of mammoths *thumbs up* ;)

Shouldn't they be trying to conserve the animals that are almost extinct instead of trying to bring one that is extinct back?

Notice that if they clone one mammoth, unless it's asexual, reproduction would be quite the obstacle for the mammoth.

I think it would be pointless, because they might have possibly died due to the heat, so unless the mammoth was shaved as soon as it was cloned or adapted in one lifetime, they would die off due to the immense amount of heat.

This, what is extinct, should stay that way. Save the species that are almost extinct is as far as we should go. Thats why Jurassic Park scares the f*ck outta me, who knows what all of 'em scientist are doing out there, for all we know they might mess up and we'll be the victims!

For many years, researchers have talked about the potential for cloning historic species. A wooly mammoth was always considered to be among the best prospects. Now, experts in Japan and Russia have agreed to interact in an effort to clone a mammoth by 2017. Check this out guys: . That will supplement you information about this sensational issue.

Moreover, albeit researchers intend to create a cloned wooly mammoth in 5 to 6 years, there are still queries about the ethics of this plan. There are strong polemics on both sides, and as researchers continue their work, the final deadline for decision and intervention will soon come.

Now, what is your stand regarding this scientific issue?
