Always wondered...

Why does Kakashi call it Raikiri and Sasuke Chidori? Is there an actual difference in power or mechanism?

Chidori was what Kakashi first developed.

Raikiri is a more concentrate, refined, and stronger version of Chidori.
Raikiri also requires a sequence of seals to use while the Chidori does not

Raikiri
is stronger and uses more concentrated chakra.. and done with a straight hand (look at sasuke)

Chidori, is just a weaker version, and is done with a clawed handshape

those are both chidori, at the last second while you are doing chidori, you straighten your fingers so it pierces better

It's true that the Raikiri is a more concentrated version of the Chidori, but the positioning of their fingers has nothing to do with it. When Kakashi used Raikiri on Zabuza/Haku his fingers were clawed. The shape of their fingers is just the user's preference

Raikiri takes more concentration in chakra than Chidori. Chidori is the Jutsu we see Kakashi use Kakashi Gaiden as a kid.

Yup, and also what Sasuke uses against Gaara in the Chuunin Finals

The technique Sasuke currently uses is still the Chidori.

Over time, Raikiri has become more of Kakashi's signature move while the Chidori's become Sasuke's
