I have tried this for long and hard but I still do not understand how some totally useless threads become so popular and yet some which are very relevant don't get over 5 posts. Could anybody tell me ?

well first of all, post in the right section because this is the wrong one!¨

second of all, usually trolls get popular because people are stupid.

Also there's the fact that a thread that has a clear cut answer/response that people generally agree with will stop getting posts because there's no reason for people to retype what they just read by someone else.
