Chapter 9: Finding a doctor
Vincent urgently ran towards a near by village. He felt himself start to tire from running as fast as he had and not knowing precisely how long. His hands and arms wanted to give out, sharing the pain his legs felt. With each passing moment, her shirt seem to become stained a violet color even more, and her body was becoming dead weight. Vincent pushed himself to keep a hold of her as he ran into the town. People gave him strange looks as he quickly passed them, glancing at the names on the building, searching desperately for a medic.
“Hey mister, wait up!” A woman’s voice reached Vincent’s ears, making him skid to a halt and turn.
A woman about 5 feet 6 inches tall was running towards Vincent. Her long brown hair swayed back and fourth with her body’s movements as she came to a stop in front of him. She panted, looking up at Vincent, squinting her hazel eyes and pushing up her glasses. “Come with me. I can help your friend.”
Vincent followed obediently as they swiftly headed towards a building that he hadn’t passed, with the words “Doctor” written on a sign above the doorframe. “Dr. Sophia.” A woman rushed towards the female that Vincent was following.
“No time to talk, I need a bed quickly and sterilize my equipment.” She demanded.
“Right, follow me sir.” The nurse said to Vincent, he said nothing as he followed the lady to a bed. “Lay her down and take her shirt off if you can. We will need to get a better look at that wound.”
The nurse walked off as Vincent quickly took her shirt off and applied more pressure onto her wound, trying to get it to stop bleeding, though it wasn’t as bad as it was during the run. The doctor came over to them, wearing an apron now. “Move your hands please.” She said softly to the worried man.
Vincent withdrew his hands and held onto Elizabeth’s now ruined shirt. “Is she going to be ok?” Vincent asked trying to pull himself together. He felt a heavy weight on his heart seeing Elizabeth in her current state.
Sophia gently removed the bra strap from Elizabeth’s shoulder as she cleaned the wound. “She will be ok. She probably passed out from shock. This wound isn’t as deep as I thought it was, when I first noticed her blood covered shirt.” She gently placed a piece of sterile gauze to Elizabeth’s shoulder and wiped the blood off, seeing the wound had stopped bleeding. “Were you the one that tied the cloth around her arm to stop the bleeding?” She asked as she stitched up the skin that had separated showing a small portion of her muscle had been torn from the encounter.
“Yes.” Vincent said softly.
“You saved her life.” Sophia commented as she sowed the torn skin together and cut the stitch as her wound was finally closed. “If you hadn’t she would have bleed out. She will need to rest and get her strength back up.” Sophia said softly as she wrapped Elizabeth’s shoulder up, after taking off the cloth so the blood could circulate into her arm again. “There was slight tearing in her muscle tissue, how was this wound caused?”
Vincent’s eyes widen for a second, “It was a sword wound.” He said as his chest tightened, but his face remained emotionless. “Is she going to be ok?”
“It’s a small incision in her shoulder muscle, so it should heal in about a week or so. Nothing major, though do you know if she’s anemic? The amount of blood that came out with that wound could be why it looked so bad.”
“Yes though she’s not a severe case, just suffers from the excessive bleeding.” Vincent said as he kept his eyes on Elizabeth, as her breathing was heavy.
“She will be fine then.” The doctor said as she checked Elizabeth’s vitals, after her shoulder was all wrapped up.
Vincent waited patiently while Sophia was examining Elizabeth. She smiled at him and he asked, “So how long will she be like this?”
“Well once the small incision in her rotator cuff mends, then she will be able to move her arm properly again. For the time being, we will have to put her arm in a sling to help keep the shoulder together.”
“Ok.” Vincent said softly as he placed a hand to Elizabeth’s cheek.
“For now let her rest and heal.” She stood to her feet and gave Vincent one last glance, though he wasn’t paying her any mind.
~Back with the two who were left behind~
“So how long will it take to catch up with Vincent?” Gabriel asked as he was carrying Elizabeth’s pack and daggers in addition to his own stuff.
Michael sighed, “I think an hour or so more. He was really worried about her.” He shifted his weight, carrying Vincent’s sword along with his stuff as well.
“There was so much blood.” Gabriel shook his head. “It wasn’t even a fatal wound so why did she bleed out like that?” Gabriel asked softly.
“Elizabeth has a blood disorder called Anemia. It’s when a person bleeds excessively because their blood is thinner. If I’m correct, it’s because she doesn’t get enough oxygen in her blood, but I’m not too sure. She never went into detail about it and I only know because I trained her when she was younger.”
“You trained Elizabeth?” Gabriel asked amazed.
“Her and Vincent both.” He said proudly.
“So then you train his brother Trevor as well?” Gabriel asked as amazement sparkled in his eyes.
Michael laughed, “No I didn’t. Elizabeth only partly trained with me as well. Her and Trevor I think did most of their training together when they were little. Elizabeth would have to give you more detail about it. Her father wanted her to be turned into a woman who could take care of herself.”
“Is her father a good man?” Gabriel asked softly.
“Elizabeth never liked her father. He was always pressuring her into doing things that she didn’t want to do. She acted like her usual normal rebel behavior, but he did go too far with the whole arrange marriage thing. Especially since Vincent and her grew up together, I’ve always been fond of them being in a relationship with the other. They make a cute couple, don’t you agree?” Michael smiled at Gabriel.
“I guess.” Gabriel shrugged, not really carrying too much on the love situation.
Michael laughed, “One day you will understand what I’m talking about a little better.”
“Uh, sure.” Gabriel said as he started to become uncomfortable with the topic. He shifted his eyes away and he noticed a small town. “Are they there?” He pointed towards the little wooden shacks.
“Actually they are. We must have been walking faster than I thought.” He said softly.
They quietly walked towards the town and easily found the medic’s house. Michael knocked and walked in, just to be greeted by the busty brunette. “Ah more patients?” She asked curiously as she looked them over, but frowned when she noticed neither of them looked ill or injured.
“A friend of ours was badly wounded and was rushed towards this town. A tall skinny man with long raven hair was carrying her, are they here by any chance?” He asked uncertainly.
The woman scowled at first, “In the corner.” She pointed to a bed all the way in the back that had a curtain drawn around the bed. “She’s sleeping, so I wouldn’t be too loud.” The doctor warned.
Michael bowed politely and then headed towards the back of the room. He peeked around the corner of the curtain to see Vincent fast asleep, with his head lying right next to Elizabeth’s. He had a hold of her hand, and from the looks of it, he had no intention of letting go. Michael’s eyes softened, seeing the guilt clear as day on his face. “Let’s rest here.” Michael said softly as he sat against the wall, making himself comfortable and holding Vincent’s sword to his shoulder.
Gabriel yawned, he felt the need for a nap as well, so he sat next to Michael and fell fast asleep with his head against the wall. Michael smiled at the sight and closed his eyes, intending to rest them, but falling into a slumber as well.
“Wake up lazy bones!” A voice said as Michael and Gabriel stirred awake after being hit in the head with something.
They mumbled and they focused their sights on the direction the flying projectiles came from. Elizabeth came into view with her shoulder all patched up and her left arm in a sling. Vincent was leaning against the wall, his eyes closed and Elizabeth was dressed in a white shirt that tied in the front, but not the same corset top like her other. Her black bra was rather visible through the shirt, but they dared not stare, knowing how feisty Elizabeth was.
“How are you feeling?” Michael asked, trying to strike up conversation after sitting in a few moments of awkward silence,
“I’ll live.” She said seriously. “We have to break into my father’s mansion.” She said without pause. “Vincent and I have been discussing it and if we can some how find documents that can pin point what the prince has been up to, then we can get outside help from a neighboring kingdom.”
“Why would a neighbor kingdom want to help this one?” Gabriel asked curiously.
“Well when Simon was around, a treaty was written up. So they would be obligated to help-“
“As we helped them in the last war.” Michael said knowingly.
“Exactly.” Elizabeth said softly.
“So when do you plan on doing this?” Gabriel asked curiously.
“Tonight.” Elizabeth said as she glanced out the window to see the sun still shining behind the clouds.
“What about your injury?” Gabriel fumed in disbelief.
“It will be fine. I’m highly medicated so I won’t feel the pain. Tonight’s the ball for noble men and women; it’s our only shot. They will be too preoccupied with their surroundings to even notice us.”
Michael noticed Gabriel’s worried gaze and he placed a hand on his shoulder, “Don’t worry Elizabeth fought in worse conditions then this. It’s the reason she’s able to kill a man without even using her hands.”
Elizabeth smiled softly. “Indeed, though in the condition I’m in now, I wouldn’t be able to take on Trevor. Hopefully he has no involvement with any of this and just wanted to pick a fight.”
Vincent snorted and the doctor over heard their whole plan. “I want to go as well.” She demanded.
Elizabeth gave her a dumb founded look, “Why?”
“Well if your injuries get worse, then I will be there to help.” She pleaded.
Elizabeth eyed her up and down and was going to tell her no, when Vincent spoke, “It’s a good idea if she tags along. If you were to hurt yourself more or if the medication wears off, then she could assist you.”
Elizabeth’s eye twitched, “Don’t get in the way then. Go gather some supplies, we will take our leave shortly.”
She nodded and ran off. Gabriel sighed, “Great.”
“Let’s get everything together.” Elizabeth ordered, as she kicked the sheets back, and stood to her feet.
Once everyone had their things and was ready to go, they set out at sunset. Sophia was trying so hard to keep up, but she ended up on Michael’s back so they wouldn’t be slowed down. Elizabeth seemed to be unaffected by the medication she was on as her footing was in sync with Vincent’s as well as her speed. “There will be guards.” Vincent warned.
“I know.” Elizabeth said as they continued to run towards the kingdom, taking a different path.
“How much longer?” Gabriel asked as he tried to keep up with the others.
“About 10 more minutes if we-“ They ran into a line of guards standing near an entrance of the noble portion of the kingdom.
“Run into trouble?” Vincent asked knowingly.
Gabriel sighed, his chest was burning and his legs ached from the speed he was forced to use. “Yes.” Elizabeth said as the guards quickly surrounded them. They all stood back to back so they could see the guards in front of them and none could flank them. Elizabeth took out 4 throwing knives, holding them between her fingers and started to run at the enemy. She stopped right in front of them, stuck her tongue out and ran the opposite direction.
“What?” A few guards asked confused as they watched Elizabeth charge towards Vincent.
“Don’t move Vincent.” Elizabeth warned as she jumped off his back, sending her flying higher into the air and releasing the knives she had in her hand, killing 4 of the guards instantly.
“You could have told me you were going to do that Elizabeth.” Vincent frowned as he watched her come down at a guard.
“What’s the fun in that?” She asked as she wrapped her legs around the guard’s neck and forced herself backwards into a black flip. She pulled her legs up, bringing the guard in a flipping motion with her and forcing his head to break her fall instead of landing, making a loud crushing sound as his skull cracked from the impact of the ground. “Ok I took care of my share.” She cheered in a childish tone, standing up, making the guards gasp at how agile she was. She didn’t even use a hand to flip herself onto the ground.
“I guess I get your original share then?” Vincent asked as he charged in, swinging his sword expertly.
“Of course.” Elizabeth grinned a cheeky smirk as she jumped over a blade from a guard that felt the need to prove himself worthy.
“You’ve always had impeccable aim Elizabeth.” Michael smiled as he drew his swords and charged his portion. Sophia was standing in the middle as Gabriel was guarding her.
“Thank you.” Elizabeth said as she rushed over to a man that was about to attack Gabriel from behind, but ended up getting drop kicked by Elizabeth. She kicked the guard in the face after he fell unconscious and turned to see a sword swipe at Gabriel. “Duck!” Elizabeth shouted as fear build inside her, making her heart thump rapidly against her chest.
Gabriel caught the man’s blade with his own. He held his hilt tightly within his hands, as he felt nervous about fighting, but determined to protect his friends. Gabriel was doing well until the guard’s swings became more powerful. “Gabriel, do something!” Michael yelled worriedly to him.
Elizabeth quickly looked around and saw a spear lying on the ground. She kicked it up with her foot, catching it with her right hand, and yelled, “Move Gabriel!”
Gabriel looked back and ducked instinctively as the spear barely missed his face and lunged into the guards. “Watch where you throw things!” Gabriel yelled back, letting his guard down, giving the opportunity for a guard to swipe his arm, and making blood gush out from the wound.
“Damnit Gabriel, never let your guard down!” Elizabeth lectured as she elegantly flipped into the air and snapped the man’s neck with her thighs, like she had down to the poor guard in the jailhouse.
Vincent swung his blade again; slitting three people’s throats at once as their heads fell off, rolling to the ground. Michael fought off two guards at once, blocking each sword with the one in each hand. He smiled as he backed away and then tossed one of the blades, catching the guard’s head, much like Elizabeth always does. He turned to the other one and charged at him as he flipped over him elegantly, easily, separating the guard’s head from his body.
Gabriel’s eyes widen as all the guards had been killed and Sophia tended to his wound in his arm. “You fight a lot like Elizabeth.” He said to Michael.
Michael smiled, “I watched those two train a lot so in a way, I learned something from her.”
Elizabeth smiled, “Yes I was oh so lucky to train with both Trevor and Vincent. No time to dilly dally, let’s go.” She commanded as she got her knives and Michael grabbed his sword that he had thrown at the guard. Vincent walked towards Elizabeth once Gabriel’s wound had been taking care of.
Sophia rushed over to Vincent, to see if he was wounded, when she tripped over one of the guard’s bodies and ended up tackling Vincent’s body to the ground, lips locked together.
Vincent cringed at the sudden impact, but Sophia kept her lips glued onto Vincent’s. Elizabeth turned to see Sophia startling Vincent’s hips as her lips were pressed against his own. Vincent was lying underneath her, unsure of what was happening. Elizabeth’s bangs hid her eyes as a threatening aura made the other two shiver. “How dare you.” Elizabeth growled out in a murderous tone.
