Chapter 5: The Gift of Genius
Kiyoshi “Do I need a reason...to love my sisters?”
Those words echo in the way of an intense piercing sensation, into the hearts of both Saki and Rei. Saki, unconscious from Daichi's genjutsu awakes due to the sensation, as if Kiyoshi's word were a release from the genjutsu.
Saki “*What is this feeling?*”
Saki shoots awake, realizing she was next to Rei. She has no memory of what she had attempted to do to Kiyoshi or of her confrontation with Manami.
Rei “Nee-chan.”
Saki turns to her sister who was opening her eyes. Rei places her hand on her chest as she awoke.
Rei “My chest feels funny.”
Saki “*What happened, what's going on?* Don't worry Rei-chan, everything will be alright.”
The two sisters hug each other and lay down. Rei falls asleep almost immediately, but Saki doesn't sleep. She looks at her little sister and ponders the feeling she had just received...
Manami looks at Kiyoshi with an expression of pity and guilt. She sees the obvious pain inside of Kiyoshi and she doesn't know what she can do about it.
Kiyoshi “The love I have for my sisters is unconditional. No matter what is done to me, how much I'm hurt or suffer I~”
Before he finishes his sentence Manami embraces him in a powerful hug. Kiyoshi's facial expression is still unexpressed, but he visibly perplexed by this girl's actions. Manami smiles as she holds Kiyoshi tighter, remembering what Daichi had said to her only moments ago.
“...you are a person who can help many people...”
“ ...you can help him heal remember that...”
Manami “*Kiyoshi-kun...I will help you heal.*”
Her presence, her thoughts, they begin to flow into Kiyoshi, returning that sensation of warmth he had felt earlier. Kiyoshi begins to fall into a trance, as if he's being controlled or soothed by Manami's mere presence.
Kiyoshi “*That feeling...it's back.*”
Kiyoshi begins to close his eyes and he sleeps in Manami's embrace.
The Next Morning
Yuki Shinobi “Daichi-san! We've docked.”The ship has docked on a large port. Daichi steps outside on the top of the boat and look in the distance. A large blanket of snow covers the entire area, as far as the eye can see.
Daichi “(smirks) It always looks the same. Everybody, we're home!”
The men on the ship cheer after Daichi. They look upon their home and laughing, cheering, and crying after returning from a long journey.
Saki “Daichi.”
Daichi turns around to see Saki standing behind him. She holds her shoulders from the chilling air.
Daichi “Don't worry, you get used to the cold. Is there something I can do for you Saki-chan?”
Saki “I want you to teach me ninjutsu.”
Daichi “Really, what for? I didn't expect you to want to become a kunoichi.”
Saki “I want to be able to protect myself. I want to be able to protect my sister.”
Rei “I want to protect nee-chan.”
Saki turns and sees Rei in the doorway leading to the bottom deck of the ship.
Saki “Rei, it's not your place to protect me. I'm the oldest, it's my job to protect you.”
Rei “You already do enough for me. I want to help you.”
Saki “Ninjutsu is dangerous! I'm not going to let~”
Rei “Then I don't want you risking yourself for me either!”
Daichi “That's enough you two. Ninjutsu is a very sacred and difficult art to learn. However I have no objections to teaching the three of you.”
Saki “The three of us?”
Daichi “It's only fair to let in Kiyoshi on this as well.”
Saki “I have objections!”
Daichi “For Kiyoshi learning?”
Saki “For either of them learning. Rei is my sister; I can't allow her to get hurt. I have to protect her!”
Daichi “Is that the same for Kiyoshi?”
Saki clinches her fist and turns her head away from Daichi. She looks towards the ground with an expression of anger.
Saki “I don't want to talk about him.”
Daichi looks seriously at Saki and contemplates her anger. His look is nonjudgmental but simply trying to understand. He closes his eyes and sighs. He walks over towards Saki and pats her on the shoulder.
Daichi “If you have the obligation to protect her then you owe it to her to let her learn.”
Saki “What do you mean?”
Daichi “Well you two aren't joined at the hip. What if something happens where you're not there to defend her? What if you're killed? Rei will be all alone and she won't have the proper tools to defend herself. You owe it to her to let her learn how to protect herself. Not only that but...”
Saki looks up at Daichi who has a very powerful and wisdom filled look on his face.
Daichi “Being an older sister means more then just protecting your younger siblings. It means that you love them enough to let them make the decisions they feel they're up to. Being siblings in general means placing your lives in each other's hands and protecting them with your own. It's a cycle if you will. Saki-chan, do you love Rei enough to put your life in her hands?”
Saki “Of course!”
Daichi “Do you believe that she loves you?”
Saki “Yes I do.”
Daichi “Then let her love you by allowing her to do just what you want to do for her.”
Saki looks at Rei who is staring right back at her. Saki feels the love in Rei's heart for her. She feels the pain that Rei has for Saki, as she feels the same in return for Rei.
Saki looks down and then smiles.
Saki “Fine.”
Rei lights up with a smile and runs to Saki and hugs her. Daichi smiles as well and looks at the two sisters. Rei and Saki head on through the boat and prepare to get off with the others. As the duo leaves Daichi's smile leaves him as he walks to the doorway. At the bottom of the steps he sees Kiyoshi looking at a scroll.
Daichi “*Kiyoshi, do you do the same?*”
Kiyoshi doesn't notice Daichi at the top of the steps as he continues reading the scroll.
Several hours pass and the men have traveled through snowy mountains and arriving at their little village. Upon returning, the clansmen welcome the Yuki clan shinobi with passion. Not even the ice and snow of the country can chill the warmth of the reunion.
Manami “Daddy!”
Yu “Manami-chan, how was your trip with Daichi-san?”
Manami “Very fun, made new friends and Daichi brought them to come live with us.”
Yu “Is that so?”
Daichi arrives with the three children in front of him as he faces his leader with a trying smile.
Daichi “Yu-sama. These children were being kidnapped by a group of bandits in the Lightning Country. It was on our way back to the ship that I noticed them. They don't have any family or home to return to. I couldn't just leave them.”
Yu “No home you say?”
Yu looks at the three children. Saki stands tall with a tough expression, Rei stands behind Saki, and Kiyoshi stands expressionless at the man.
Yu “(smiles) These look like fine children. They may stay as long as they wish.”
Saki and Rei smile, while Kiyoshi stays unchanged. Kiyoshi's lack of emotion returns the attention of the leader in the same manor as Daichi.
Daichi “They've requested to be trained in the shinobi arts. They wish to know how to defend themselves and each other, so I have agreed to take them under my wing.”
Yu “Very well, I'm sure you don't mind sharing your sensei do you Manami-chan?”
Manami “Not at all.”
After the reunion of the soldiers, the clan returns to it's normal behavior. The soldiers return to their families and rest, and the civilians continue their work. In the backwaters of the village, Daichi stands in front of the three siblings, with Manami sitting atop a tree watching.
Daichi “From here on out, you'll address me as Daichi-sensei. Manami-chan will be your senpai. You three are my students and I will teach you the fundamentals of Ninjutsu.”
Saki “Sensei I have a question.”
Daichi “What is it?”
Saki “Will you teach us how to control ice?”
Daichi “Unfortunately no. You see my ability to control ice is genetic, meaning I could only teach it to somebody who is within the Yuki clan, who also possesses the same gene.”
Manami “Yeah, like me. Manipulating ice isn't only a clan secret but a bloodline secret.”
Kiyoshi “Will you teach us Genjutsu?”
Saki and Rei look with confusion. Daichi looks with slight surprise at his statement and Manami chuckles, remembering the night before.
Daichi “What do you know about Genjutsu.”
Kiyoshi “Well, I read a scroll that I found in one of your cabins. I couldn't read a lot of the words but I think it has something to do with sending chakra to someone's brain. Like you did last night.”
Daichi “Last night?”
Kiyoshi “I think so. I also saw something about using your chakra stop it. That's how you block it or something.”
Daichi “*He read about it, did he...No he couldn't have. Not after only reading it* Genjutsu is a little advanced for right now. You guys need to work your way up to that. For now I will teach you from the beginning.”
The three look intense. Daichi faces them with a serious aura towards them.
Daichi “Lesson number 1, Taijutsu.”
Daichi runs towards the three children. Their new lives as members of the Yuki clan, begin.
Several Months Pass
Spring has rolled by in the gentle Snow country, however, the snow and ice remains thick. In these months, Kiyoshi, Saki, and Rei have come far in their studies of the shinobi arts.In the training grounds behind the village, the three siblings train as Daichi rushes the three siblings at once. Saki leaps up and launches a kick towards Daichi. Daichi but fails as he grabs her leg and whips her away from Kiyoshi and Rei.
Rei “Saki-nee!”
Rei runs in the direction where Saki was thrown, but Daichi quickly intercepts her by launching a powerful kick, which Rei barely manages to block. Despite her defense, the power of the kick sent her tumbling to the ground. Kiyoshi attempts to head for his sisters, but Manami leaps in front of him and stops him.
Manami “I'm going to fight you Kiyoshi-kun.”
Kiyoshi “Manami-chan.”
She shoots a punch towards Kiyoshi as he easily side steps and evades the punch. Manami continues on with a barrage of punches and kicks, leaving Kiyoshi to do nothing more then defend himself. Daichi turns his attention away from Rei and Saki and looks at Kiyoshi.
Daichi “*He's not fighting back. Even so, Manami has years of experience over him but he's managing to keep up with her. He adapts fast.*”
A shadow falls over Daichi and he looks up to see Saki leaping down towards him.
Saki “You let your guard down sensei!”
Daichi blocks overhead and punches Saki in her thigh, sending intense pain throughout her leg.
Daichi “Sorry Saki, but it's still not good enough.”
Daichi turns his attention to Kiyoshi again, and notices where Kiyoshi's focus is.
Daichi “*He's focusing on Saki and Rei. If that's the case, then he's holding back.*”
Daichi slams Saki into the snow hard as Rei emerges and runs towards Daichi. Daichi pushes Rei's arm away and strikes her on the side of the neck, knocking her out with ease.
Daichi “*Forgive me girls, but I need to see something.*”
Daichi makes rapid single handed seals.
Daichi “Hyuton: Touketsu Toburai (Ice Release: Frozen Burial).”
The snow on the ground begins solidifying on the bodies of the two young girls. Saki, still partially conscious, begins to feel her body becoming tighter as the ice begins biting her skin.
Saki “What are you doing sensei?”
Daichi says nothing in reply. He stands staring at Saki and Rei with a deep seriousness while his jutsu slowly covers more of their bodies. Daichi shifts his eyes subtlety towards Manami and Kiyoshi.
Daichi “*Kiyoshi, what wills you to fight?*”
Kiyoshi's expression shifts into a panicked one. His attention turns completely towards Daichi, watching his sisters being encased in ice. At that moment Manami launches a punch towards Kiyoshi's face expecting to catch him off guard. With masterful swiftness and skill Kiyoshi intercepts Manami's wrist and pulls her into his knee. He knocks the wind out of her and darts past her towards Daichi as she falls to the ground.
Daichi “*Those reflexes! He had no problem.*”
Kiyoshi leaps up within range of Daichi to execute his attack. Daichi simply grabs the child by his neck and slams him down into the ground. The snow cushions the impact but the force was enough to render Kiyoshi unconscious. Daichi releases his jutsu on Rei and Saki, by this time Saki is unconscious as well. Daichi turns his attention to a hobbled over Manami and then to Daichi. His look is filled with shock and at the amount of skill he demonstrated against Manami.
Daichi “*Kiyoshi.*”
**Flashback**
Note: This begins from Kiyoshi, Saki, and Rei's first day of training.
Daichi easily penetrates the defenses of his new students. Before they could even react Daichi attacks all three of them individually sending them flying in opposite directions. Saki gets up quickly in a rage and runs towards Daichi. She doesn't even advance two feet before Daichi appears behind her and side kicks her to the ground again. The grounded Kiyoshi sees this and attempts to dart out like his sister. The moment he gets on his feet, Daichi gets in front of him and sweeps Kiyoshi's legs, landing him on his back again. Kiyoshi looks up at Daichi who stands over him.
Daichi “I can tell that the first thing we're going to need to work on is your reflexes, all of you. You need to be able to keep up with me at least at my bare minimum.”
**A week passes**
Daichi stands atop a small hill, using his ice nature to create several ice bullets. He shoots them towards the three siblings, using the method as an exercise to increase their reflexive reaction. The children are hit several times by the bullets; however, Kiyoshi receives the least bruises and shots. Daichi keeps an eye on Kiyoshi and notices these feats over and over again as the time goes on.
The same practice continues for several days as their reflexes slowly improve each time. Kiyoshi's on the other hand, improves more quickly as he adepts to the situation better. Each passing day Kiyoshi's observed to excel beyond his sisters, and each day Daichi notices
**End Flashback**
Daichi “He gets stronger everyday. His ability to adapt is nothing less then amazing.”
Manami “Senpai.”
Daichi turns to see Manami walking over towards him, holding her stomach.
Daichi “Manami-chan, from now on don't hold back when you fight Kiyoshi. Fight him with everything you have understand?”
Manami nods and Daichi sends her away...
Kiyoshi wakes up in his room and he feels a delirious sensation. He looks to the right of him and sees two black scrolls beside him.
Daichi “I want you to read those and practice on your own for a little while.”
Daichi's voice shakes Kiyoshi's mind straight, as he looks in the door way. Kiyoshi looks back to the scrolls and contemplates for a moment about what his sensei asks of him.
Daichi “There is something special about you Kiyoshi that I want to analyze. For the next month I'm not going to train you. You're going to read those scrolls and I want you to memorize whatever information it gives you and do whatever it asks of you. I'm giving you a month; this is your own privet task for you. Do you understand?”
Kiyoshi simply nods in agreement. Daichi leaves the room and Kiyoshi opens one of the scrolls and begins reading.
Over the coarse of the next month Kiyoshi remains in his room reading the scrolls. Saki and Rei continue on with their training with Daichi and Manami as they have done. Not once did either Saki nor Rei question where their brother was. Daichi kept his eye on Kiyoshi from the shadows, as Kiyoshi occasionally would head towards the training grounds. He practices his strikes and kicks on the trees set up, thrusting his hands in the hard pact snow, and practicing kata
Note: For those of you who don't know, kata is a martial form of predetermined stances, strikes, kicks, and blocks. My sensei refers kata as an encyclopedia, as kata teaches correct technique and often enough has applications to it to be utilized in real combat.
The month passes and Daichi calls Kiyoshi to the training ground before sunrise. Kiyoshi faces Daichi with reluctance in his face as Daichi looks back at Kiyoshi with seriousness.
Daichi “Come at me with everything you've learned from those scrolls.”
Kiyoshi “But sensei~”
Daichi doesn't allow for Kiyoshi to finish his sentence. Daichi rushes Kiyoshi with a great speed and launches his first strike. Demonstrating more heightened reflex, Kiyoshi evades the punch and moves himself away from Daichi. Without wasting any movement Daichi continues his assault on Kiyoshi, and Kiyoshi continues to evade the attacks.
Daichi “Fight back”
Daichi increases his speed significantly and gets behind Kiyoshi. He kicks him in the back sending him tumbling several feet on the ground. Kiyoshi rebounds quickly only to have Daichi mere inches away from his face. Daichi punches Kiyoshi again, but the strike is blocked by Kiyoshi. The force of the blow is strong enough to knock him back, but Kiyoshi remains firm on his feet. Daichi continues towards, this time with a kick. The expression that follows on Daichi's face was nothing less then pure astonishment. Kiyoshi leaps up and uses his hand to balance himself on Daichi's leg.
Daichi “*That technique!*”
Kiyoshi uses his arm to push off and whips a kick towards Daichi's head. Daichi blocks with his right and grabs Kiyoshi's leg with his left hand. Before Kiyoshi is able to complete his full technique Daichi pulls him into a punch right into the stomach. Daichi drops Kiyoshi, who falls unconscious.
Daichi “*Buyou no Koujaku (Dance of the Sparrow).*”
Daichi goes to Kiyoshi and slings him over his shoulder and walks back towards the village, in deep thought.
Daichi “*To master, or at least be able to pull off the first portion of that technique. A technique that would take a shinobi with proper instruction nearly a year to even grasp the physical concept of.*”
Daichi closes his eyes and smiles.
Daichi “*Kiyoshi, you sure do have one hell of a gift.*”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright people, this chapter is a lot shorter then my last couple of chapters, it's about half the length. This may not seem as good a chapter as the last ones, but I'm working on a new style. I'm going to make the chapters shorter so people won't feel so bothered to read the length of the chapter. I assure you that our next few chapters will be stronger in the storyline.
Before anything else, I have to thank my sensei, ThatOneChick for helping me with my grammer (which was really a problem) and for proof reading our chapter.
I hope you all enjoy the chapter for what it's worth, this doesn't advance the plot as much as you may think so bare with it for the time being, it definatly will get better.
