Warning Contains Violence and Gore
Chapter 3: Unspeakable Acts
Gabriel’s eyes snapped open as he slowly pushed himself off the frozen ground. His body was numb from the snow that he had been laying in for countless hours and all he could hear was the thumping of his heart. Memories of his training session with his father began to plague his mind, reminding him how he ended up in his current predicament. There was an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach as he could hear nothing but the wind howling at the moon. He attempted to stand to his feet, but the numbness had claimed his legs, which resulted into a face first contact with the snow. He tried again, this attempt was a success, but he shivered violently as the wind blew through him. He wrapped his arms around himself in a desperate attempt to conjure up what little heat his body gave off as he slowly trailed off towards his home.
Gabriel soon arrived in front of the small village where his eyes were filled with horror and sadness. The wind blew again, this time wafting the scent of death in his face, almost as if it were laughing at the unspeakable horrors that had occurred. Pain was etched into his facial features as he forced his legs to run towards the snow that was stained a crimson red.
Once he reached the source of where the massive amount of blood was coming from, he couldn't help but to feel nauseous. He dropped to his knees, trying to avoid the sight of blood that surrounded the bodies that littered the ground. He turned one of the bodies over just to find the face of his own father. "Dad!" He shouted as he touched his father’s face with trembling hands. "Dad!" He shouted again, tears streaming from his eyes now. There was still no answer and he hugged his father’s dead body to himself. Even after what his father had done to him earlier this morning, he still couldn’t fight the sadness of losing a parent.
"So I missed one." A malicious voice said from behind Gabriel. He slowly turned to see a man whose face was rugged from his wild facial hair and scars that covered a good portion of his face. His pale skin complemented the scars nicely, while his scars added to the bloodthirsty look in his hazel eyes. Gabriel had never seen this man before, but the blood staining his clothes told him that he was the one responsible for the malicious onslaught.
"Who are you?" Gabriel asked in a frightened tone. He tried to make it sound strong, but in the end, his voice failed him. Gabriel’s stomach turned into a knot like it had when he trained with his father earlier today. He knew for sure the man in front of him wouldn’t hold back and would gladly take his life.
As that thought came to his mind, fear made itself present on his face. The murderous man smiled a sinister grin at the boy’s reaction, drinking in the fear he had caused Gabriel without even doing anything to him directly. “Will it ease your mind to know the name of your killer?” He teased as he drew his blood stained katana from its sheath. He didn’t wait for Gabriel to respond as he continued, “I won’t tell you my name, but how about I will enlighten you a bit as to why this,” he gestured towards the dead bodies, “occurred.” The man toyed with Gabriel some more.
Gabriel’s eyes widen as anger erupted into his veins. Hatred darkened his blue eyes, making them have an icy feel to them. “Tell me why!” He shouted as he stood to his feet, his father’s sword in his hand now. “How was someone like YOU able to kill a master swords man like my father!” His words echoed off the trees and filled the air with tension.
The man smiled as he raised an eyebrow, amused by Gabriel’s outburst. “I see so you’ve already accepted the fact that you are going to die, but you will go with a fight.” The man sighed, “How troublesome, such a young boy thinks he can take me on and do what his father could not.” He taunted as he turned his head away from Gabriel and rested his sword on his shoulder, leaving himself open for an attack.
Gabriel wanted to lunge forward and sink his father’s blade into the man’s stomach, but he refrained from it. He was uncertain of what the man could do and if his father failed that meant he had to be careful and not make careless mistakes. “You still haven’t answered my question.” Gabriel said in a soft tone, trying to study his opponent with his eyes and take control of the emotions that were raging inside him like a wild fire.
The man turned, “Oh how honorable of you, not rushing in when I drop my guard. You should’ve jumped at the opportunity when you had it, you won’t get another.” He promised, facing Gabriel now, measuring him with his gaze. “You are weak but you aren’t as irrational as some of the more experienced people I've slaughtered here today. Maybe you will bring me some fun. As for why I did it, you will die so I guess I could tell you. Right before you take your last breath!” He grinned as he charged Gabriel.
Gabriel swiftly reflected the attack as the loud screeching from the blades meeting, filled the air. “I will not die by your hands.” Gabriel glared at the man.
Laughter erupted from the man’s lips, “You can’t kill me.” His eyes filled with glee as he lifted his leg up and kicked Gabriel in the stomach, sending him flying into the side of a house. Gabriel coughed as a burning sensation filled his throat and red liquid filled his hand. That kick had more force in it then he thought it would, especially since the man’s appearance was rather deceiving. “Not what you would expect from a scrawny man huh?” The killer laughed.
Gabriel dug the sword into the ground, leaning on it as he tried to steady himself into a standing position. Thoughts flooded through his mind as he quickly tried to observe the situation and come up with a better plan then what he originally had. He dug deep within himself and found the courage he needed as he quickly charged the man, switching from a defensive strategy to an offensive one.
The air was filled with the familiar screeching sound as the man easily blocked the barrage of attacks Gabriel tried to inflict on him. He didn’t give up, mirroring his father’s attacks from the early training session. Making each swing count, the next one stronger than the last, while not letting up as well. The man wore a shock expression on his face as Gabriel’s facial expression changed into a more dangerous one. Adrenalin was fueling Gabriel’s motives, he didn’t want to die by this man’s hands and he had no intention of it. The situation was giving Gabriel just what he needed to win and at that very moment, he felt like he could take on the world if he had to. The man was about to say something, but let out a gasp of surprise instead.
The man looked to his shoulder to see Gabriel’s sword had pierced him as blood was oozing down his front, staining his clothes red. The man grabbed for the blade, making Gabriel retreat backwards, not wanting the man to land another blow on him like earlier. Once he had a firm hold on the blade, he withdrew it from his shoulder. The blade protested as it separated the flesh in his palm and causing a small stream of blood to evacuate its prison.
“Well this is interesting.” The man said in surprise, watching the blood ooze down his arm and paint the snow. “I wasn’t expecting you to actually injure me.” He looked towards his shoulder and then towards Gabriel, “It seems like I took you too lightly because of you being so young. I won’t make the same mistake twice.” He promised as he tore a piece of his shirt and wrapped it around his hand so he could wield his sword properly.
Gabriel watched as the killer tossed his sword away from them, letting him know he had no chance of getting to it before he reached him. His eyes swiftly searched his surroundings and noticed an axe propped up against a pile of wood. He measured the distance between the axe and himself and quickly thought of a plan.
Gabriel charged the crazed man, ignoring the taunts and laughter that came from him as he jumped onto the killer’s sword and propelled off it twisting his body in mid air. Gabriel landed gracefully and skidded backwards, on top of the snow, with his right hand out and waiting for the axe's handle to connect. Once the cold grip of the axe reached his hand, he dug into the snow with his feet, making himself stop sliding and quickly picked the axe up.
Gabriel wasted no time, as the killer still hadn’t processed what just happened as Gabriel charged forward. The Man turned in time for the axe to rip through his torso and slide off his lower half. “How?” The man asked as pain filled his tone and he flinched, trying not to think about what had just happened.
“My will to live was greater than yours.” Gabriel growled out as he swung the axe again, making contact with the man’s neck and easily slicing through it. The head flew into a near by window, shattering the glass upon contact and landing with a thud. Gabriel let out a sigh of relief as he fell on top of the crimson colored snow, thankful that he was able to live through this encounter and also wondering how he was able to. Gabriel looked over towards his father’s corpse; sorrow filled his eyes as he whispered softly, “Are you proud of me now father?”
