Even if you are, the surface will be covered by a layer or ponds of lava as well as lava drops falling everywhere, which will hit you the moment your head comes out of the ground, if by some chance you manage to emerge from a zone which isn't already covered in lava.

And since Pervy said you're new and at the beginning of the battle you mentioned you wanted to learn i guess i should at least explain to you why you were defeated.

It is true you can feel the heat. You could even feel the ground around you shaking. Those signs are enough for you to know something is up. Now, in your current position (underground), you cannot see anything, meaning you don't know where the attack is coming from so you should move to a safe place. The safe place should be at the surface.
The wrong thing you did, assuming you couldn't defend from my attack while underground, was to go deeper underground. If you knew you couldn't defend yourself there, you should get out of there.
Other thing you did wrong was the wind jutsu. Even tough you can move underground, you are still completely surrounded by rock and earth. The wind wouldn't have any space to go so it was useless doing it. If by any chance you used a bigger technique, you could have blown yourself to bits as wind didn't have place to go. What would happen if you could suddenly put a great amount of wind or an expanding force, out of nowhere, underground? It would create something similar to an explosion because of all the pressure on that point wanting to expand.
You could have for example, as soon as you felt the heat and sensed the ground shaking around you, come immediately to the surface and then as soon as you start appearing at the surface, you would use that S-rank earth armour technique, to immediately cover your body as soon as you would get out of the ground, which should be enough to stop lava from making direct contact with your skin.
