Tsunade was definitly better when they were younger, much better than Sakura was (a least Tsunade got one of the bells).

But I think Jiraiya was the second strongest in their 18-? But after he learned Sage arts, he became the strongest.

But I can't understand why he couldn't stop Orochimaru whenever they met. I'm pretty sure they had several encounters with each other before the series started.

Jiraiya - best combatant and teacher (4th Hokage, Naruto, Pein, Konan,...), became a good analyst at sealing jutsu - vice women

Orochimaru - smartest perhaps, best scientist researching jutsu, greatest developer of forbidden jutsu at the cost of his humanity and others' lives. - vice power and greed

Tsunade - great Taijutsu, greatest medical ninja ever perhaps, 5th Hokage for 3+ years so she can lead. - vice gambling and temper

Or simply because Jiraiya is weaker than orochimaru...


I love the way people know there exact strengths at all different ages despite only seeing there battle experiences properly in the "now" part of the series, quite a laugh.


sorry but jiraiya had trouble doing anything to or against orochimaru in the original naruto, i know jiraiya had poison in him but still, hes a sannin and he was able to form ninjutsu, orochimarus arms were dead, he was a useless lump (fast lump admittedly) and jiraiya sucked against him

Maybe when they were young, orochimaru was the strongest but now Jiraiya is strongest by far. Back before Shippuden Jiraiya told Tsunade that he would kill her if she betrayed Konoha without doubt by the look in his eyes. Tsunade isn't a Sannin for nothing but even though Kabuto popped food pills and knew her weakness, Tsunade (A SANNIN!) pretty much lost against a jounin at kakashi's level. Orochimaru has proved that he is at Hokage level by defeating the 3rd. But Jiraiya has proved to be a level beyond that of a Hokage.

Itachi stated very cleary (sorry uchiha fans) that both Itachi AND Kisame couldn't take Jiraiya. And judging on how the sage arts are very mysterious, and Itachi would know what he's talking about, plus it would seem Itachi doesn't even know about Hermit Mode. So if regular Jiraiya can take both Itachi and Kisame. What could Hermit Jiraiya do?...HE ALMOST DEFEATED A GOD(Pein)!!!! Only if he knew his secret. What else do you want from Jiraiya???

Conclusion, Jiraiya is by far the strongest of the Sannin.

Itachi could beat jiraiya, he said that because he never wanted to capture naruto, itachi only joined akatsuki to keep tabs on tobi/madara, he disagreed with akatsukis plans, hence why they never caught there bijuus.

Itachi has yatas mirror which deflects ALL attacks, at the VERY least jiraiya would simply run out of chakra and have to retreat.

Itachi could have easily captured naruto on MANY occasions but never did for these reasons.
