I don't see how any DBZ character's death could be considered sad. You knew they were going to be back and even while they were dead they still we doing stuff. Not really a true death IMO.
Aeris' death was definitely sad, and unexpected, but theres something about the level of graphics that prevents it from becoming too sad. Just not detailed enough to bring out strong emotions.
One of the saddest deaths from an anime for me would be Nicholas D. Wolfwood from Trigun. Great anime IMO. After that it would probably be Asuma. Just a great job of writing by Kishi during that entire storyline.
Almost forgot a possibly sadder death. When Major Hughes is killed in FMA it was just shocking. You really never see characters like that get killed off. Just a likable guy in all aspects who had a family waiting for him back home.
