dunno if this is the right place or thread for this but oh well :|

i never heard of slope in my life i have a certain amount of days before i get an F in math class. which i already have.

could anyone tell me what it means to find the slope, y-intercept, and equation for a line? :/

but dumb it down ._.

well thats strange...
well then...to get y, u gotta put it by itself in this form of a linear equation, the slope intercept form of an equation: y=mx+b. y is your y coordinate (not intercept) (in (x,y)), m is ur slope (rise/run (up+/down- over left-/right+)), x is your x coordinate (in (x,y)) and b is ur y intercept.

to find your y intercept (b), you put ur y interval and ur x interval and ur slope in the equation, and solve for b. for example, if ur coordinates are (8,7) and ur slope is +3, to find ur y intercept you:
y=mx+b
7=3(8)+b
7=24+b
7-24=b
-17=b
and thats your y intercept.

to get ur slope is to place ur rise (up+/down-) over ur run (left-/right+) and solve it. like if ur rise is +4, and ur run is +2, your rise/run is 4/2 = 2, which is ur slope.

and slope intercept form of a linear equation i explained in the first part.

So basically what you're doing is analysing the components that make up the equation of a line.

It's pretty simple actually.

The equation for any straight line is y= mx + b

The slope is the 'm' part of the equation. In other words the slope is the gradient of the line.
The y-intercept is the 'b' part of the equation. This is where the line crosses the y axis.

So to find the equation of any line all you need is a point on that line [which is where you get the (x,y)] and the gradient/slope -> (m)
Example:
You must be registered for see images

This equation is y= ½x +2

The slope in this equation is ½

The y-intercept is 2.

_____________________________________

To find your slope [m] you can do it in two ways.
Rise
-----
Run
You must be registered for see images

or if you have two points: y2-y1 / x2-x1
Example:
You must be registered for see images

.................................x1,y2 and x2,y2
Here the two points are (0,5) and (2,0)

so the slope of this line would be
0-5 divided by 2-0 which is equal to -2.5.

Hmm i think that's about it. :lawliet:

From what I remember, Slope is a fraction that represents a pattern in a graph. You need to find a Y= equation to calculate the slope.
