It was Prime Hiruzen. While Madara and Hashirama were Indra's and Ashura's transmigrant, Hiruzen was Hagoromo's transmigrant.

Madura never lost anybody to gain the MS, neither did Itachi (didn't see the hate) nor did Shisui (didn't see the hate).
Itachi did lose someone to gain MS. He awakened it after the death of Shisui. We don't have to have seen "the hate" for him to have awakened the MS due to pain of loss.

Shisui also lost someone too. He revealed in the novel that he "let his friend die" during the 3rd great ninja war. That was how he awakened his MS.

As for Madara, we didn't see who he lost, but that doesn't mean that he didn't lose anyone. We know that Madara cared about his family and loved ones a little more than most other shinobi of the era of warring states. In fact, it was this very similarity to Hashirama that initially led to those two becoming friends (their desire for peace). Therefore, it would make sense for Madara to be able to feel the pain of loss when a friend or family member died (enough for him to awaken mangekyou sharingan). One possible person that Madara could have lost to awaken MS was his father Tajima. We don't know when and how Tajima died, but we do know that Madara was already the leader of the Uchiha clan before Izuna died, and he and Izuna both already had mangekyou sharingan by that point.

Yeah, if that was an argument then Madara would've had it at 5, alongside the Sharingan. All that it takes to trigger the sharingan and MS is chakra grand stimulation through an emotional experience. Sarah wanting to see her father, Obito wanting to protect/help rin, Madagascar wanting to protect his brother. Sasuke was traumatised, but wanting to defeat Haku was the true awakening. A sudden surge releases stronger chakra and a stronger power. That's why the curse of hatred is BS, made by Nazirama.

I agree that the curse of hatred thing is founded in racism/discrimination, but the pain of loss requirement for the MS is not.

I feel as though you are equating the two. I feel as though you are of the belief that awakening MS through losing someone automatically equates to becoming consumed by hatred.

That is not the case.

The manga has established that an Uchiha's sharingan evolves into the mangekyou sharingan when they experience the pain of loss. That doesn't mean that they have to fall victim to the so called curse of hatred that is attributed to their clan.
