The given reason was that he was keeping a watch on them from the inside, the theory is he was Jirayas spy and he kept Tobi from attacking konohagakure.

Wait wasn't it because Itachi didn't want Obito to kill Sasuke until Itachi died. I'm pretty sure that's why he joined. Also, it doesn't make for him to be a spy for Jiraya since Jiraya didn't know who any of them were.

I dont remember that, what do you mean he didn't know any of them? Jiraya said he had a spy that led him to the leader of Akatsuki and that gave him info on when they were coming for Naruto. But it was never said who the spy was.

Forgive me I might be remembering wrong, it was probably a "source" that jiraya had, I don't tihnk it was ever stated it was a spy.

What are you on mate. They did nothing yet and Itachi could have EASILY talked them out of it but didn't. He is not a saint but a mass murderer and that's also how most of the people in Naruto think. Also, why did he even join Akatsuki again? I forgot.

no you kill him before he harms anyone. if itachi thought like you konoha would have been destroyed, his heroic genocide saved the village

that was itachis sacrifice, he will forever be known as a madman and killer but few know the truth that he is actually the greatest hero of konoha. even hashirama knows this and calls him amazing. why would the guy who created konoha praise itachi if he was a crazy mass murderer?

Everyone in naruto are full of sins by that logic..Minato killed 1000s in war he did it for his village but he still killed them he is a bad guy too.

Agreed. The "I am actually a good guy" twist created numerous plot holes.

That twist is my fav moment of the series. But he would probably made more sense if the reveal had been justified by something other than like just dollowing orders. And it would have made more sense and probably made him a cooler vhar had he stayed evil.
