I don't get the first question completely but I presume it's because breaking a promise shows a thing they don't like to recognise.

God may exist independent of that idea.

i agree with u yuké chan!!!...but wut u think of a person who love a girl who don't love him...and then he promise himself to not love her (becuz of some reasons)...
