Let's put things in some perspective though, RDR just came out GoW had months to build a following before the vote.

God of War was good, and it somehow deserved the award, but I would still go with RDR 2.

I respect that God of War won game of the year but if Red dead redemption 2 had more time so that audience would have a good feel and understanding of the game, I believe that RD2 would of won. The game was only recently released.

While I personally enjoyed RDR2 more, GOW winning is no real surprise to me. It came out in April and RDR2 was still very new. In fact I'm shocked at how many awards RDR2 did win!

RDR2 seems like an achievement, like people must have worked really hard on that. But GOW2 was like lightning in the bottle, it all came together really well, it's hard to get that many good reviews it got.
