I'm not surprised. The average person has lower standards when it comes to liking a caracter.

It takes more intellect - which is an attribute the average person often lack - to understand better characters like Sasuke or Itachi, so they go for the obvious and easiest route: Naruto. That's why Naruto is so popular and has so many fans out there.

She’s not underwhelming imao she has her fan-service moments but she is super likeable to someone who’s not familiar with anime and a massive underdog who has a lot of potential.

I think she's liked because she lost her mother, wanted to do something which her father disapproved of. She was looking for a family to make up for her lack of family, she stood up to her father, reconciled with him only to disappear. Lucy returned to find out he had died and kept up believing she was alive and never gave up hope. Her love for her new family pushed her to become stronger and better. She then sacrificed her oldest friend(Aquarius), the last gift from her mother, who was both like her mother/friend for her friends. She goes onto to still track everybody hoping they'll come together again, in the final war we're introduced to Lady Brandish because of her(reason enough to like her). She doesn't let being a female get in the way of saving Natsu or figuring out a way to beat my fav(bad writing) Oh and the fan service doesn't hurt either.

In summarised format she was a female who went from fodder to strong and served some pivotal role. Hiro didn't capitalise on her potential but she's still been used better than most females are.

Also it takes to be special kind of moron to fanboy characters that killed his own parents especially when said characters wasn't in any way forced to do so and had many other options to chose .

But your reply is not surprising, many people like to talk like smartasses why in reality they don't realise how stupid they sound

Its like you're almost suggesting i said fan service is what makes her underwhelming which is false. The rest can be said for most if not all anime characters. For me, she seemed useless and unneeded from the beginning.. Her involvements in each and every arc always felt forced and the attempt at a backstory with her dad somewhat came too late at least for me.

Up until that point it felt like she was stealing a living on the show despite being a main. She's an okay character don't get me wrong.. but the adulation she gets is just weird to me.. One would almost think she was one of the better written characters in FT.
