Early on Kishimoto had a rule that technology was fine but guns would render shuriken and kunai virtually obsolete in most situations so guns were never introduced. This made sense for early Naruto, but since then Naruto and pals have obtained to ability to literally spam nukes (bijuu bombs), transform into giant armored titans, cast in-extinguishable fire from their eyeballs, etc. At this point small metal projectiles fired from a handheld contraption don’t seem so overpowered anymore.
I realize recently we’ve seen a laser gattling gun used by Mecha Ao in the Boruto manga but that was firing plasma blasts that can easily be dodged not actual metal bullets. I think an appropriate way to introduce guns would be to have the scientist dude invent a basic handgun and be like, “I can’t believe no one ever thought of this before, seems like obvious, using chakra (instead of gunpowder) you can fire tiny metal bullets from this metal hand cannon. Give it a try! Just be careful not to aim it at yourself or anyone else!”
Over time guns would replace shuriken and kunai and we’d have badass gun ninjas. As the characters got stronger they’d be able to dodge bullets and deflect them, which would also give a tangible way to measure speed feats and power scaling.
Kunai and shuriken are already pretty much obsolete at this point, so the original reason for conventional guns being non-existent is gone. What do you think? Should I just be satisfied with the laser weapons we’ve been seeing? I just think normal guns are way cooler than laser guns and would give us an easy way to measure speed feats.
