Naruto and Sasuke got WAY too much attention in Shippuden and way too many power ups that rendered the rest of the characters irrelevant early on. Neji and Rock Lee could have gained power ups to remain relevant and help defeat some of the enemies but they were instead completely eclipsed by Naruto and Sasuke early on and for the rest of the story were forced into small forgettable cameo roles unless they were dying (in the case of Neji).

Really wish Neji, Lee, and perhaps even Shikimaru could have perfected their ninjutsu and expanded it into all kinds of powerful variants to at least play pivotal roles in defeating some of the main villains instead of being turned into useless fodder. Would have also liked to see more powerful ninja from other villages besides the Kage and jinchuriki.

Neji definitely got the short end of the stick.

Story would've become bloated and would've lost focus. Naruto was never meant to be that kind of story.

If Hinata died instead of Neji the story would've been better and we could've seen Neji develop.

Yeah, you'd like that wouldn't you. :lol
And no, no it wouldn't.

OT : Agreed. Both had tons of potential as well as others.
