I don't remember the arguments, I want to know because I'm writing fan fiction about something other than Naruto and I want to create the Anti-Itachi. Like how he was "supposed" to have been.

Itachi is the genius, he's ideological, he wants to become Hokage and perhaps that'll let the Uchiha gain their rightful station. So far he's still the same Itachi. He joins the ANBU and sees the elders are an obstruction to peace between the clan and the Uchiha especially Danzo. He plays Danzo and solos him setting up an incident outside the village (enemy assassinnation) and the elders(similar patterns). He would be eliminating anything which endangers the village and the Uchiha clan at the same time.

He or Shisui become the head of root(KA would play a part in it) so they can still protect the village from extetnal threats. Itachi would still be working to become the Hokage and accomplish his dream. Hiruzen would become a freer Hokage without his restraints (advisors) if he was to step out of line KA would sort him out and make him a better puppet Kage.

Itachi should've realized that he held more weight in the decision. If he hadn't made himself a tool, both he and the Elders know the Leaf would've weakened enough for the next village to take over. He could've used that fact as leverage for forcing the Elders to accept terms that they wouldn't even consider under normal circumstances. Essentially making them pick their poison, to be ruled by total enemies or disgruntled allies.
