boruto manga get alot of anti fan due to change the character artwork . the only way to pull the fan back is make main chars pull out some awesome jutsu and badass fight and win again much more stronger enemy than them . (anime did it anyway with sarada perfrom sharingan copy and it worked well) . lol even this chapter they make sadara perfrom great fire ball jutsu as a kid (great fire ball not standard fire ball)
so yeah Ao will lost again a bunch of kids or aleast shocking about how strong new team 7 are as genin and konoha help arrive make him run away .

Maybe not fully retconned, it wasn't even disconsidered from Canon after the manga did its stuff with Boruto's Seal and whatnot, but we'll most definitely be seeing some new stuff, and while I doubt we'll be getting a full appearance from Ao, as that would probably be too random a reveal to have with no explanation after we assumed he'd been dead for so long, perhaps we'll get an appearance from a hooded figure that only later is revealed to have been Ao.
