Looking at Boruto as not a spin-off, but a completely original story, do you think its first arc surpasses the Land of Waves arc?

Nope, not at all. The Zabuza arc is far better than the Shojoji arc. Better fights, Naruto learned his ninja way and Haku & Zabuza are way better than Shojoji & his nameless goons.
Edit: wait the recap arc? Not the Shojoji arc? Eh, i think i'm gonna go with the Zabuza arc either way.

Anyway, if by first arc, you mean the Momoshiki arc, then I will have to say that Boruto's first arc was better. Land of waves was still good though.

Now if you are referring to the Shojoji arc as Boruto's first arc, then the land of waves was better.

Boruto's arc was literally an adaptation of a movie. Something that is less then 2 hours in content crammed into one place.

I wouldn't consider it the first Boruto arc personally since it isn't original content.

The Zabuza arc is ahead by long strides in emotion, atmosphere, world building and character growth.

Hm seem i was wrong thought he meant in general. We can't even say since movie rehash i wouldn't consider an arc since it was more so well just a movie.
