How do you have a hard time accepting this when your favorite character started a world war over his dead crush?

That's what I thought too, but there's some type of convenience that Ao was sent to retrieval the Vessel, and Konohamaru is being attacked by a guy who has a prosthetic-type leg.

The reason why Konohamaru's fight wasn't explained in detail yet, was because they were still building up the facts leading up to the fight. Ao is the only 'villain' bar Kashin Koji who was introduced in the last two chapters, so it makes sense for him to be the one to do the attacking.

I think the preview for the last chapter kind of spoils it too.

Ao being the one to fight Konohamaru is the most likely scenario. It's odd to introduce him as a friend/ally to Boruto and his team, and then immediately reveal him as an antagonist. I'm almost getting Haku vibes from how this will play out.
