Ao's byakugan actually is the eye of Boruto's never mentioned Grandma.
Hiashi's wife had unlocked a dangerous byukugan power. Hyugas erased her existance from the clan's mind to keep it secret. But she tried to run away, affraid the elders would use her, affraid Danzo would hear about it. Despite having that great eye power, she was phisically weak (plus she was recovering from childbirth) and was defeated.
Ao took her right eye. When he was going to face death, Ao eye unlocked and he was projected into another dimension. He manage to came back thanks to Kara and Otsutuskis who were going trough different dimentions to check on chakra fruits during harvest season.
They make Kara recruit him and he now works for them.
