I believe Boruto is insecure of his own abilities

Reason why I say this is because from what we've seen in the manga and anime he has shown to be able to utilize three different element types (although possibly C-rank jutsu's) but nonetheless he is very talented which begs the question "why did he take the Kote from Katasuke when he has already shown that he us much capable on his own?" So aside from the typical answer that he was trying to get Naruto's attention i believe he is/was insecure of his own abilities compared to those he looks up to which in case is Naruto and Sasuke, we can see his insecurity come out when Sasuke told him his Rasengan was small and Boruto threw his Rasengan before seeing the results it produced, hopefully this side of Boruto gets expanded more on through the Chunin Exams. Thoughts?

He probably gets nervous and has an inferiority complex like Hinata. Things come easy to him but when he feels like he failed Hinata's personality comes out.

He probably gets nervous.

I think so too maybe its due to his background being the grandson of the 4th and the son of the 7th Hokage its understandable for him to feel nervous or insecure when possibly being compared to those guys

Not really sure if that's the case exactly. I think that Boruto's probably just not to used to the idea of failing, especially since he worked for a week straight to learn the Rasengan. And to be told that his Rasengan was unimpressive, after actually doing something, would be a low blow.

I think that Anime Boruto hasn't been put into a situation where he has been backed into a corner. He's only going up against fodders, and the one's that he actually struggles against, aren't that strong either (Iwabe was holding back in Episode 2 -- No Staff).

Essentially the only reason why he would cheat in the first place was because he opted for the short cut, it was faster and he didn't see this as an issue. Anime Boruto would probably use the kote device since it would be an easy win.

But since he's talented he doesn't run into any issues yet.

Makes sense. Boruto was talented he should have believed in his training

He's talented but absolutely insecure in the film. It's the basis of the film's conflict, he learned the jutsu elements the hard way and got no recognition or acknowledgement from his Dad for it. So Boruto, more than ever was a character with something to prove.
