So I assume its because that giant spike got stuck in his back, but why? Why did the Gedou Mazou stick a giant spike in his back?

The Rinnegan wasn't originally his.
Gedo Mazou only recognizes its true master.

Just joking. I dunno, honestly.

You joke but you are probably right in this. Maybe the fact that he wasn't the original Rinnegan user causes this sort of drain on the body?

Because Nagato isn't the master of the yin yang. Or Madara set it so when pain uses the mezo he'd become a weak puppet which he could take over with relative ease.

I thought he was only referring to why the Gedo Mazou stuck a spike in his back. But yes, definitely. It drained his life-force. Possibly all doujutsu drain the life-force. Just it's nothing on the natural wielders since their body is compatible with the doujutsu.

But since Rinnegan is the most powerful and also immensely chakra-taxing, it's naturally more detrimental to the life-force of the wielder, especially if they didn't awaken it naturally.

Nagato was a contrived wielder, so for him to use dual Rinnegan for that many years was miraculous. Obito had Hashirama dna and was an Uchiha on top of that but still found two Rinnegan profusely chakra-taxing.
Because Nagato isn't the master of the yin yang. Or Madara set it so when pain uses the mezo he'd become a weak puppet which he could take over with relative ease.
That too. Madara was conniving and grotesquely meticulous in his plans. I wouldn't be surprised if he planned that out too.

Nagato set it up so he could still use the pains. It's very taxing

As we see in his prime he didn't need the six paths or the bars stuck in him

You shrink in size with immediate huge Chakra loss. Same thing happened with Kisame and Kurama, when they got lots of their Chakra drained quickly, although Kisame and Kurama regained their size eventually, Nagato didn't until he absorbed Hachibi's Chakra for some reason. It was probably suitable for his character design.

When Nagato summoned the Mazou for offensive purposes, it was empty and it needed humongous Chakra to activate a Jutsu, so it fed on Nagato's reserves and Nagato became emaciated due to massive Chakra needed to control that big mighty statue and activate an almost invincible Jutsu. To control something as big and powerful as the Mazo with your own Chakra is impossible for pretty much any Naruto character; Nagato was obviously an exception because of his stupid Chakra reserves. Not even Obito or Madara could control the Mazo with their own Chakra and relied on Biju instead. This just shows Nagato's Chakra supply is out of the world, and the databook does say he was the candidate for the Rinnegan that Madara chose, due to his Biju reserves of Chakra.

madara and tobi did sync with gedo mazou and they both have the chakra rods in their body. Nagato was implanted in his back, tobi in his right arm w/right chest, and madara in his left palm.

Those chakra blades are shadow and light style jutsu/weapon that each person needs to use their six path power through (gedo mazou control).

The reason is simple..

He wasn't complete like Hagoromo..

Even Madara who awaken the Rinne was stuck on his death bed once he summoned it as a old man..
(Once madara detached from the mazou he died & He had Hashiroids)

Obito didn't have that problem because half his body is Zetsu/Hashiroids, closer to the source (6paths senjutsu) which is why he was able to sync with it an even then it was alot to handle for him.. (He's no trans-migrant so that's a big feat for Obito)

"nearly tore him to shreds mentally/physically"

You have to be whole (RSM/JJ) to not have the effects of all who went through the (PEIN) of it's summoning..

The mazou stuck to him when he was enraged to bring out the phantom dragon made of his own life energy , madara and obito has never been seen using that technique so maybe bcuz they're not stuck to it and to all the people saying he couldnt control the rinnegan , he was the freaking "Third Sage of the six paths" according to obito as he had a lineage of senju according to zetsu and uzumaki according to kabuto so both combined make him the perfect user of rinnegan.
