Even outside of the village they were more famous than kakashi who seems to be the Drake of the narutoverse early in the manga. While kakashi was famous they were feared.

With Kotoamatsukami shi sui literally can defeat everyone in narutoverse at the time only rinnegan users and maybe naruto due to six paths chakra can avoid it.

Tsukoyami can only be countered by sasuke with itachi's help basically not really trying

Shi sui's basic genjutsu :sharingan was only countered by izanagi a for bidden sharigan jutsu thats so powerful it cheats death and seals that sharingan eye for good. Anyway his genjutsu sharigan was cast at a long distance on Ao's team while they had their backs to him and were still moving

Shi sui and itachi are the only shinobi that can cast genjutsu without anyone being able to sense them using the genjutsu

Only six paths chakra individuals can defeat them and surely at the time they lived in the village no one not even hiruzen could compete nor jiraya nor tsunade nor kakashi nor gai
