I think Naruto vs. Gaara was a higher level fight than we thought. It's basically around the same general area with Minato vs. kid mask man in regards to biju level chakra being used and I guess kage level chakra being used in each of their fight.

In the second databook they did not introduced the concept of senjutsu just yet, but they did hinted at the fact that it's a technique that those of Mount Myōboku are only capable of doing. Which is a red flag right there.
And just like the senjutsu gamakichi used (syrup gun), Gamabunta used his senjutsu water style liquid bullet.
It explains so much why gamabunta was able to survive so much ninjutsus from a biju and cut the arm off a biju that is known for having one the best defense of the nine biju. Sasuke himself even said that it felt like a hurricane during the battle. It's no wonder too with senjutsu and biju chakra flying around everywhere, this battle was a high level kage fight arguably above between two little ass 13 year old genins.
Naruto's demon form chakra alone was already at kage level but because his reserves or stamina are nothing compared to his timeskip, he wasn't able to maintain it for long and later collapsed drained of no stamina (energy) to even move. Gaara himself as well drawing out a full biju with playing possum technique and reverting back is something that can only be compared to what Yugito Nii did, and that was in part 2. But of course the difference in stamina is different at such a young age that he wasn't able to maintain the transformation that long dropping on his knees completely depleted on the ground.
So just a little credit to Naruto and Gaara, since I always give Kakashi, Tobi, pain, and Sasuke some credit for what they do. These kids where one of the few kids in the series to fight at such a high caliber fight as a teenager.
