The anime introduced a bunch of new characters but they were nowhere to be seen in the Chunin exams in the manga so maybe they didnt pass the entrance exams? I hope they explain this in the manga and introduce them because otherwise the anime is going to have a lot of trouble incorperating them into the mangas story and its going to be confusing as hell.

Three options

1. Completely gloss over them in upcoming arcs
2.) give em small cameo like failing 1st part of chuunin exams
3.) incorporate them into the story

& then we'll have to see if Boruto remembers his doujutsu when he awakens it in the manga.

All in all I think the anime is the official story after taking the manga script/story and refining it with kishi which includes a more proper beginning of the academy days were they meet eachother

They passed the exams. Also, the issue of Denki/Iwabe/Sumire not being in the manga is not as big an issue as you might think. They could simply be shown failing one of the first two stages of the chunin exams. Maybe they lost the capture the flag exam. Heck, the anime could even do some filler fights featuring them in the 3rd round. It's not like this would actually change the plot or anything about Boruto cheating against Yurui and Shikadai, or about the arrival of Momoshiki and Kinshiki.

But later on what role will they play? If the anime follows the manga, surely they will eventually have to play some role in the greater plot or else what was the point of all this character development for them? Are they just going to forget about being ninjas and move to another village?

Well, I agree that these characters should play a role, but we should take into account a few things.

Lately, the manga has been focused mainly on Boruto and Tentou. Even Sarada and Mitsuki have been somewhat sidelined in recent chapters, and we haven't seen team Moegi (ino-shika-cho) or Metal Lee since the chunin exams. If even these characters can just be sidelined and not shown, then it is certain that characters who are currently anime only can be thrown to the way side (not that I want that to happen).

Additionally, the Naruto series threw side characters to the way side all the time. Team Guy. Team Kurenai. Etc... I'm not saying that this is a good thing, but it happened nonetheless. Who's to say that this just won't be the case with Sumire/Denki/Iwabe?

There is hope though. Even if the anime stays true to the manga, the manga is only in its first arc of new content. Like I said before, right now the manga is just focused on Boruto and Tentou, but once this Mujina bandits/Shojoji stuff is done, the manga may move into a new arc that is more inclusive of other characters. At that point, Sumire/Denki/Iwabe may make their manga debut.

All the manga needs to do is acknowledge their existence and explain why they were absent from the Chunnin exams and I'll be happy.
