"years" sounds like a stretch. They probably did that currently because Boruto did not use his eye during the Chunin Exam, so they wanted to make sense of that and make it consistent.

I think Boruto's eye is in the preliminary stage to becoming the Byakugan. It doesn't make any sense. But Boruto was only able to see the chakra at first, then he was able to see Nue's chakra network, then he was able to see through barriers. I think it's taking a while to actually become the Byakugan.

His eye seems more of a mutation of the Byakugan that will become stronger. Based on current feats what you're implying is his eye is weaker and developing into Byakugan simply because he doesn't have a grasp of it yet which is false.

That would be like saying Basic Rinnengan is developing into 3T Sharingan since a novice with Rinn feats aren't as good as an expert with 3T

That's because you're under the impression that his eye is greater than the Byakugan, that it has more power than the Byakugan. But what gives you that idea? What Boruto has been able to see is the chakra of the Nue (or Sumire) possessing other people; those weren't spirits. And you can obviously see the development in stages: he was only able to see the chakra, then the chakra network, then through the dimension's portal barrier--all things the Byakugan can do.

It's a Byaku variant so seeing the chakra network should've been a given with time.. His seeing through different vibrations/Dimensions is something his eye will develop once he figures out how to activate it at will..

I think the eye is a common Ootsutsuki eye, hence why both Toneri and Momoshiki know of it, so it isn't a first.

What are you talking about? Sasuke didn't get the Mangekyo Sharingan until after his fight with Itachi. It took 3 years for it to happen after initially getting the Sharingan, no?
