What are the differences compared to regular lightning technigues apart from the color?
Kakashi used it in todays Boruto episode.

It was created from the novel.

Its similar to Black Lightning, which means it's more potent than Lightning Release.

It's a more potent variant for sure. But as for the color, it's just for aesthetics.

So he basically strengthened his lightning release to rely less on speed?
As without the sharingan, going fast in a linear direction to increase your chidori pierce can be unsafe (if you cant notice the counter the enemy does to you).

Maybe he should have taken some inspiration from the Raikages.
As those lack sharingan too, but they increase all their senses with lightning armor and
dont seem to suffer from not noticing counters due to lack of sharingan.
Unless you need massive amounts of chakra for lightning armor, which Kakashi lacks
and he isnt as tanky as Ay and his father either.

I think it was something to show Kakashi till relevant he was Hokage but everyone downplays him without obito eye but he was a prodigy and had skills before he got the eye

Didn't he develop the Chidori before he had Obito's eye?

Or am I wrong in this?

Correct.
He indeed made chidori before he was given Obito's eye.
Minato told Kakashi that chidori was incomplete because if Kakashi moved the way you do for chidori, he would not be able to detect a counter attack.
Therefore chidori was unsafe/incomplete technique.

However this weakness was gone with sharingan.
As he could detect counters with it.

I heard that it is just nerfed version of Lighting Blade, as Kakashi doesn't have Sharingan anymore. But it is probably still stronger than simple Chidori.

I think it is a slowed down version and more controllable chidori. Without the Sharingan, he needs to change since his view disrupted when using the Chidori.

Its a short to mid distants lighting projectile sword. I think its a step up from lighting blade. Its more potent i mean it changes the weather on impact. It was made to compensate the loss of the sharingan and it improved it. In the novel it was acknowledged buy tsugikage as a really powerful jutsu.
