Not really but you were on to something, unique Rinnegan techs are basically the equivalent of a third MS jutsu, it reflects the user's will in a way.

Madara had a fatal experience with backstabs and as a result he unlocked Limbo, Sasuke had a fatal experience with Madara's S/t as a result he awakened Ameno.
