I've also wondered about that. I am still rooted with the idea that his Rinnegan should be red but adjusted with the purple one instead. Rinnegan isn't supposed to have tomoes but his has. I'm still irked with this retcon-esque about the Rinnegan. maybe someone can educate me further.

I settle with the case that just like how Uchiha awaken their respective tomoes until it becomes a 3T Sharingan, maybe Sasuke need to let his Rinnegan mature and gain those other three tomoes eventually.

Yes, that is why we (I mean, I) shouldn't compare Madara's Rinnegan and Sasuke's. But do the tomoe really correspond to a certain power, like OP suggests??

Thats just a theory, but we know that Kaguyas Rinnesharingan > Sasukes > Rinnegan

Tomoe do correlate with power based on manga

1st/2nd grants visual ability to see through ninjutsu displayed by Obito

2nd allows copying hand signs and movements based on Sasuke copying lee and handwritting

3rd Tomoe grants precog

Well the sage wasn't immortal. He did physically pass away unlike Kaguya or Madara who was going to live forever physically and spiritually.

His tomoe are missing because he temporarily lost his Sharingan powers. When he uses Kaguya's S/t he's technically performing a RinneSharingan ability and therefore a jutsu of beyond his standard level.


It's like how Izanagi users go blind or how Gate users die. Pushing their body beyond the limit of their powers results in a loss of those powers. But Rikudou chakra cures all side effects of jutsu hence why he doesn't lose his Shringan permanently.



And the tomoe represent Kaguya's eye and the 9 dimensions, 9 realms, 9 tomoe.

Apparently there were originally 12 tomoe not 9.. The original juubi was shown to have 4 rows of tomoe which is 12 which is what Hogo /Hamura fought.. Kaguya's resurrection was in a weaker states then the original form because she was revived with 9 bijuu of Hogoromo's power.. (Check background on juubi/Kaguya on Wiki)

9Tomoe is a weaker version of he original 12 tomoe which Kaguya was trying to maintain for her war with other Otsutsuki..
