The US wants to protect the DOLLAR. Russia wants to protect its interest as being the top seller of natural gas to Europe and they back Syria.

And here Trump supporters thought voting for him would prevent war with Russia. Hmpf! Anyway, it's more that America's interests in Syria conflicts with Russia (them being Assad's ally). I'm guessing this is all because of that Syrian pilot that was shot down by the US earlier.

As Putin said, regardless who is in office, the foreign policy is always the same. Also, the US was planning for this since Bush era. Back when Bush was Prez. General whats-his-face said there were 7 countries we were going to war with and he predicted them right.
