Oh the stupidy is strong with this one. Nearly defeated makes Byakugan stronger than 3 to me sharingan. Perhaps somebody needs lessons in comprehension.

this isn't about age or Itachi defense force vs this drunk Anbu guy
this is about annalysing information about the first Uchiha vs byakugan encounter
were the Uchiha had 3 Tomoe (and yes knew how to use it better then Part 1 Sasuke) and the Anbu spy guy had one eye byakugan and a half assed GF were he taught himself
like I stated if you want to toss in age then you can do the same for the byakugan too since the byakugan and gentlefist ability is proportional to how much you train as well as how much talent you have

Even if you want to say they are kids, the manga made it very clear both, or at the very least, Itachi, was above the other clan members even at that age.

Itachi was not above Fugaku. You don't even have solid evidence to prove he was stronger than his father, you're over exaggerating Itachi's skills at eleven years old so you can make Mukai seem like this anomaly.
They were both inexperienced children who fought a thirty-six year old, and the author of the story had them fight him in taijutsu to the death. Notice how he had to make them fight Mukai in taijutsu to the death and yet they still won? No sensible shinobi would fight a Hyuga in taijutsu but this asspull story is supposed to make me praise Mukai?
You people are desperate, using comparisons of grown ass adults to kids.
Wanna know how the Sharingan is better than the Byakugan? Sasuke would decimate Himawari, therefore, regardless of age and experience the Sharingan is automatically stronger. She knocked out Naruto of all people right? If she can't beat Sasuke then obviously the Sharingan is stronger. Do you see the hole in your logic?

Regardless of him axing himself to prevent the leak of information the dude literally took care of two 3T sharingan users and also countered against long range attacks like the fireball which means:
1. He outclassed their precog with only 1 byakugan that he learnt to awaken
2. Prior to that event he single handily took down twenty Sunagakure shinobi — all armed — without so much as a scratch, using nothing but taijutsu and his Byakugan.
3. He wasn't even that well versed in Gentle Fist due to being not part of the Hyuga clan but a distant relative with mixed genes but was able to still be better in hand to hand combat with only a halved version of the Eight Trigrams Thirty-Two Palms — the Eight Trigrams Sixteen Palms.
Mind you Hinata in part two was able to do 32 palms but eventually got to 64 palms in the war arc.
Now let us add also the fact that
i. Itachi and Shisui are considered prodigies
ii. They are better then anyone else in the clan at that age
iii. Literally right after this event Itachi begins the Uchiha massacre operation
You also say the dude was old but he wasn't that versed in Hyuga techs and ability PLUS...
The Byakugan and GF KKG can be also trained and further developed like:
- Hinata trained her range from seeing targets 50 metres away; by age 18, she can see targets 20 kilometres away.
- Hima doing a single gentle fist strike to take down a opponent compared to 64 of the 361 points
- A user can also train the KKG GF to be able to use other techs as well
- This anbu dude half heartily taught himself
So your age idea means nothing from the literal match up that occurred
So it is more so a nerf of the Byakugan side then it is for your young poor prodigies that are so innocent but are part of the Anbu "woe is me" argument
