I think it's both.
He never used Gentle Fist before in the anime but realized that Hanabi uses his own strength against him. So he just mimiced her and He did well.

I like the fighting style ; it's pretty good for that age ; but it has flaws (eg : If the opponent can use long-range jutsu (eg : Shikadai ; that's the reason he lost to Shikadai in Chunin exams) , or genjutsu)

That's true but Boruto did manage to perform very well against shikadai when he quickly evade all of his basic shadow possession technique even using his shadow clones to the most efficient way to get to him.

When Bolt got very close in making physical contact, Shikadai had to resort using his best trump card which is something complete unprecedented even surpass shikamaru caliber because his jutsu allows to encompass the whole field and it is basically inescapable if you are very close distance

Anyway the point is Bolt can probably manage his own atleast to certain degree when dealing with long range user, however Boruto already has elemental ninjutsu to compensate it and he can use shadow clones as his decoy if he wanted to outsmart the opponent.
