From looking at any mythology revolving around 'blue eyes', I came across the concept of the evil eye curse. Basically, the curse is supposed to cast through a look and bring misfortune to people ranging from sickness to death. Many cultures also believe that acquiring the eye will cause misfortune or death. You can read on this on your own time by googling the: "Evil eye curse" (most the information was on wikipedia and other mythology sites).
*Another fun thing to point out is that 'nue' creature that has been attacking the citizens of Konohagakure, also has been noted to cause misfortune, death, and illness to those it comes into contact with.
Back to the theory at hand the evil eye also has a very tight association with blue eyes. In areas such as Greece where blue eyes were rare, they were thought to hold the curse of the evil eye. Assyrian belief also explains that people with blue eyes were most likely to have the evil eye curse.

The manga places strong emphasis on Boruto's blue eyes. In the manga Momoshiki tells Boruto that his blue eyes will take everything from him one day and Sarada mentions that his eye's are bluer than the Seventh's.

Here is the kicker, though. Boruto's dojutsu shares a strong resemblance to the nazar talismans that are used to fend off the evil eye curse. It shares the similar light and blue white coloration of the iris, along with the darkened sclera. The minor difference is the coloration of the pupil which is black in the nazar.
