The US Senate on Thursday voted to to overturn broadband privacy rules that would have required internet service providers get consumer consent before selling their web browsing data to advertisers or other data companies.

The vote passed 50 to 48, with most Republicans in favor of the repeal and most Democrats against, and would also prevent the FCC from ever enacting similar consumer protections. It now heads to the House.

So what does this mean to people like you and me?

In the simplest terms, it means that an ISP could potentially collect and sell a personal dossier on you. The whole thing is about about making money off of advertising. It probably knows your sexual preferences, your fetishes, and your deepest worries. It knows your political leanings, the protests you’ve been to, the books you’ve searched for, your health info, passwords, and even your social security.

The more data an ISP has, the better profile it builds of you, which they can then sell for more money to the data brokers who take that information and turn it over to advertisers.

And this Web history has your personal information on it?

Honestly with things like the Internet and issues of security the boundaries of privacy has become non existent I don't think no one really wants to give up their privacy or other rights we constantly give up but most of us are ignorant on the daily laws that pass without our consent I'm not liberal or conservative but I don't think the right will make any noise about this I just hope dems repeal this when they have majority but I have little faith in them aswell

It's whatever you do on the internet: porn, amazon, manga websites, jobs searches, etc.

Stories like these aren't making big headlines because everyone is so focused on Trump. Meanwhile, the GOP is taking advantage of this and trying to pass terrible laws.

That's nice and all, but a little more clarification and enlightenment would be beneficial to those of us who don't quite get it.

there are ways you can encyrpt your traffic coming from your computer so that not even your isp can see what is being transferred, for example proxies, tor ect

That's all well and good, but not everyone is able to encrypt or is aware of what that is or even aware that they're able to be spied on without their consent by their ISP and have delicate information shared to third parties.

i guess but the only people that really should be worried about this are the ones who do illegal things, but i dont think this law should have passed in the first place but you know

Are you saying that you are comfortable with people spying on your private life, even though you know you aren't doing anything illegal?

Having your fetishes, political views, social security, downloads, passwords, your location, health data, financial information, and so on available to be distributed to third parties wouldn't bother you?

Even still, constitutionally I find this wrong; people have a right to privacy.

Yes, but you had me confused with what else you said; it almost sounded as if you were trying to justify it from your first comment.

It just didn't seem like an issue that bothered you.

well of course you are entitled to online privacy its just that its not like it will drastically change your life where as if you look at an online pedophile ect, they are the ones who should be more worried then common folk, or people that torrent ect

I'd rather not have to find out if it will or not.

I just know it's not right and unconstitutional even if it doesn't.

well it has been known for a while that isps do this illegaly and sell information to people who can use it properly
But now it's legal, which makes it online hunting season.

And I'm sure there were limits and consequences with what they could sell illegally if what you are saying is indeed true.

well of course their were 'consequences' however there was speculation that the government was already doing what they have now made legal
