What Is Your Life's Purpose?

I'm under the assumption that everyone has had a moment of meditation away from everyday life to contemplated life's greatest mysteries; Why are we here, what happens after we die, what is the reality, what is the purpose does the universe serve, etc. The answers to these unknowns are beyond our life time, and yet we spend most of our time pondering them; some of us our entire lives. Yet there's one question that's more relative to our lifetime and is generally more undemanding in terms of answering, but most people have yet to ever question themselves, "what's your life's purpose?"

Have you ever asked yourself what your life's overall purpose is? Do you have an answer? If you do, are you satisfied with your answer?

I don't view life from the standpoint of morals. Life for me is about passing on your genes to the next generation.

Well, I sort of have insurance in religion, just in case there is a heaven, lol.

As for my specific purpose? Well, I don't have any really. I just wanna live in comfort and security among loved ones, get a job I don't hate, make a decent amount of money, find love, start my own family, etc.

I don't have the drive to go after the big dreams like rule the world, become a millionaire, become famous, etc. Besides, they have their downsides too.

Despite being a technophile I found the manifesto of Ted Kaczynski (aka the Unabomber) to be one of the greatest texts I have read in my life. And I feel so because of his terse but profound elaboration of an answer to your question.

The purpose of life, says Kaczynski, is the pursuit and attainment of goals – nothing less, and nothing more. The rest of Kaczynski’s treatise is an attack on technology, which he blames for all of the ills of modern life.

He has a point that homo sapiens evolved to live its purpose, i.e. goal-directed behaviour, in the primitive circumstances of hunter-gatherer life – he, however, failed to see that the ‘nature of man’ is a dynamic, and not a static, thing.

The Neolithic revolution not only destroyed the old hunter-gatherer way of life but all the evidence (including recent shotgun evidence in the form of genomics) suggests that most of the races of man that adopted farming rapidly evolved, even biologically, to adopt to farming (the classic on this is Greg Cochran’s the 10,000 year explosion). In the long run, man’s nature will once again evolve to accommodate the change in his environment.

In this age where survival and reproduction are not our reasons for existence I’ve chosen to pursue, as my goal in life, what the ancient western sages and philosophers, particularly the stoics, called ‘arete,’ meaning, simply, wisdom, courage, temperance and justice. This is the path to eudaimonia.
