- Neongenesis Evangelion
- Stein Gate

These are all quite philosophical...though one could argue that even mainstream animes like Naruto have serious implications as well

Cowboy Bebop is up there, but I went into it knowing how it ended, so I think it might've softened the blow. Mushishi could take up the whole list, depending on which episode I think of. As a whole, it falls just short.
