Why is it that every time a new trend comes out, everyone is participating regardless of whether they had an interest in that particular thing or not?

Isn't it hard on the "trend setters" who are just trying to please themselves, who by chance, end up being unable to escape the world of trends itself because everyone wants to follow their style? I've always wondered if it's wrong for people who really are different to brag about it, seeing as though they truly do stand out and are themselves.

Acceptance is something everyone is after. Whether it's adopting social norms and trends to gain approval of the collective, or to rebel against social norms to gain the approval of "outsiders" and "individuals", everyone needs acceptance.

What about the people who don't seem to care? They seek acceptance but at a moderate level, as in, finding things in common with others rather than full-blown band-wagoning which is what I'm talking about specifically.

Most people want to fit in to a society as much as they can. It's to do with how they identify themselves as. Look at all the stereotypical cliques in a school. Sometimes though, the rise in popularity in something can make someone see what makes people like it and so they like it too.

It's mainly advertisement that creates the idea of things becoming trending topics or items.

Its sort of how you explained it; Everyone cares, just not as much as others. From what I've seen, people who seem to not care are either satisfied with themselves as individuals, or have completely different interests that aren't considered mainstream.

There probably isn't a one size fits all answer to explain bandwagoning. It could a whole host of things; having an extroverted personality leads people to be more sociable and attention seeking making it more likely to follow trends, feeling neglected by society, being unsatisfied as an individual and trying to find an identity, gaining popularity, etc, etc.
