I'm not American, I just recently started watching an American serie movie, House of cards. And it greatly piqued my interest about the two dominant political parties in America (republican and democratic parties)
So, what are the main differences in ideology, policy etc between these parties?

One claims to be for America while it's really just for the elite while the other claims to be for the people but is really just for the elite.

The Democratic party is generally more geared towards liberal views - which means they are more interested in a more involved government which regulates the economy and supports progressive movement (which means they support a changing government). Democrats are interested in protecting your social rights and the earth. In contrast to republicans being more conservative, meaning they like a less involved government (free-market economy, or liaise-fair economics) and tend to want to preserve old principles of the US government while protecting big businesses, their wallets and polluting the earth. Here's some examples Young padawan..

> Republicans are for deregulation and tax cuts for businesses and the rich, because they think that allows companies to succeed, leading to more jobs, which means the wealth trickles down to the middle and working classes. Democrats think that corporate greed impedes the trickle-down process from happening, so they are for less tax cuts for the rich, and more tax cuts for the middle class, working class, and poor.

> Republicans think we should drill in our country for oil, to relieve our dependance on foreign oil. Democrats dont see that as a sustainable solution, and think we should invest in wind, solar, natural gas, hybrids instead.

> Republicans have more conservative views about social issues, and these issues tend to align with their religious views. They don't believe a woman should have the right to get an abortion. They also don't believe gay people should be allowed marital rights. Democrats do.

> Republicans don't think we should spend as much for government programs such as welfare, healthcare, education. They think those programs are costly to the people who work and pay taxes, and make us a "nanny state". They think Americans should generally take responsibility for themselves rather than relying on government. Democrats believe that government should be a tool to improve communities, and people's way of life. They also think that the "personal responsibility" theory doesn't work because greed gets in the way. Government intervention is what allows the have-nots to get the boost they need to succeed on their own.

My take at least..

Republicans are filthy opportunistic failures who keep reminiscing about the past and the Liberal are pathetic beggars who keep thinking that life is a romantic book.

Republicans are more on the Capitalist side and also tend to be Christians. Not all of them, of course, but it's kind of what represents the Republican party in general.

Not necessarily true since Republicans constantly fight for policies which impede on individual rights and increase government, such as banning abortion, gay marriage, teaching creationism, stop and frisk, militarized police, expand military, etc.

I'm surprised no one has given a good answer to the thread yet.

Here's a TL;DR Version

Democratic Party
  • Liberal philosophy
  • Higher taxation on the wealthy
  • Community and social responsibility
  • Low Military Spending
  • Liberal Social Views (Pro-LGBTQI, Pro-choice, pro-gay marriage)
  • Government subsidies (Health Care, Welfare, Planned Parenthood)
  • Mascot: Donkey | Color: Red

Republican Party
  • Conservative philosophy
  • Set taxes based on free market
  • Individuality and justice
  • High Military spending
  • Traditional Social Views (Anti-LGBTQI, pro-life, anti-gay marriage)
  • Privatized service providers > government programs
  • Mascot: Elephant | Color: Blue

Note: Not everyone who identifies as a democrat or a republican follows democratic or republican views to a T. May Vary

What does individuality and justice refer to? Pretty certain Republicans don't want individuality, like being openly gay or transexual, and hardly ever prosecute cops for shooting civilians.

Individuality would also entail being tolerant of other religions and cultures.

Pssst....Lightbringer, your bias is showing.

You may not feel what I stated doesn't follow how you perceive republicans to be, but I'm going by a non-biased, black and white definition of what views the republican party holds. I agree with what you're saying, but don't debate me on the facts mate. :mew:

You just said you agree with me, but don't debate you on the facts?

Just because they listed it, doesn't mean that's what they represent.

Republicans claim they are for family values and small government, but that's obviously not true.

Most of what you guys are arguing is the hypocrisy of both parties.
