of course garp was way past his time... but he still would have tried dying maybe.

Garp could have been an accessory to Akainu's murder...

I don't think Garp was strong enough to kill him right then and there but given the heat of the moment, Akainu could have been done off-guard or divided attention could have got him killed by WB...

All in all, it was right to hold Garp down.

For what's it worth, you saying Akainu could win means less than a character within the manga itself saying so.

The only reason Akainu would definitely win in story is his role going forward is more significant than Garp but if this were inconsequential and we used everything we've gotten from the manga up to that point only then I think Garp has just as much a case to win as Akainu would.
