Since when did something need to turn black for Haki to have been used?

even for lava it takes time to heat a steel blade enough to actually melt it.... its not like he put his sword inside lava for 10+mins. -.-

He was using Haki. That nothing went black is a completely irrelevant argument as there are numerous examples of characters using Haki, but having no change in their appearance:

- Rayleigh intercepting and blocking Kizaru

- Garp hitting and hurting Luffy multiple times.

- The Boa sisters fighting Luffy

etc.

It's only after the time-skip that the whole blackening thing was introduced. However I don't think this was because Oda hadn't figured out the concept of Haki completely yet as it's simply too important for that. The fact that Shanks already used the KD during the very first chapter indicates Oda always had an idea about this ability. I find it highly unlikely that he neglected it for 600 chapters and then rapidly worked the concept out during the time-skip. Oda most likely intentionally didn't want to draw too much attention towards Haki in the first half of the series.

Till further notice what Shanks uses is a plain, regular cutlass. As Mihawk explained to Zoro: a sword infused with Haki perfectly is almost unbreakable.

When rayleigh showed haki to luffy he didn't coat his hand in black to stop elephant back then, he stated clearly that armanent haki can be used without coating also and u need to coat when use much higher force or want to go on complete offensive!!!

Yea I wanted to only show post timeskip examples, just in case anyone wanted to bring up the invisible haki being a pre timeskip only thing.

The black haki is hardening. It's mostly to add toughness and durability to wherever it's applied.

Also Haki was definitely not planned out by Oda properly. Too many discrepancies in the manga early on. You have guys like Crocodile who called the New World their second home, showed no hints of haki when every fodder is capable of using it in the New World (aka Tashigi). How they would allow someone into the Shichibukai without something as basic as armament haki isn't conceivable.

I agree with you, Haki was never introduced or had any relevance before amazon lily. But still there are some who thinks it is from chap 1...

Rayleigh said Haki was an invisible armor so

Instantly melted a sword just by being close to it

Yea the chap 1 incident is more backtracking and calling possible common intimidation something it might have never been set out to be. There is no foreshadowing or solid proof that what Shanks did was indeed written as haki back then.

It's just a common case of an author basing future events off something they wrote in the past w/o any tangible marker to say it was foreshadowed (for instance a character could have dropped some sort of hint).

I think the Haki introduction was done pretty well crocodile isn't a hand to hand fighter he fights using his logia based devil fruit so he couldn't show his Haki. I think characters have been using Haki for longer then we knew like rob lucci now that I think about it luffy is a robber man but has been hit and hurt by punches even before the Haki was given a name. Without knowing it the enemies of luffy have been using Haki like lucci. Even zoro vs Mr.1 he dodged all the falling rubble while half dead simply stating he knew where the boulders wouldn't fall. Just goes to show the genius of Oda.
