I didn't watch the episode, but it sounds believable enough. Sasuke took control of the 9 bijuu. Shinobi of a weaker class should easily succumb to the effects of the shaingan. Literally 99% ninja cannot properly combat the sharingan. It's one of the reasons the clan was hailed as the strongest for so long.
