Just what the hell is 'dexterity'?

New 'DB' style has given us a few character attributes and dexterity is one of them. I searched for the definition of it in some sites, but it still looks pretty confusing.

Just what is 'dexterity' in NV and how would it be applied?

In my mind dexterity means careful and calculated skill but some say it means speed for some reason (?)

"Definition of dexterous
1
: skillful and competent with the hands <a dexterous surgeon>"

So it either means skill at using and handling complicated jutsu and attacks (Sarada's shuriken bouncing for example)

or

Quick-thinking and ability to react. I go with the first one.

OD translated it as agility and responsiveness

I never really understood why people were saying dexterity = speed. In that case, they should've written speed instead of dexterity.

I guess this gif pretty much describes what dexterity is? How would that be applied in NV?

敏捷力 (Dexterity) is made from the combo of 敏捷 (Nimble, Agile, Quick) and 力 (Ability/Power). It means closer to something like 'responsiveness' or 'agility', IMHO.

Translator: OrganicDinosaur
Source: NarutoForum @ Boruto stat thread

----------------

Each stat page or data page involves the same orientated theme of strength, intelligence, speed, chakra, and add on's.

Regardless, the text book translation is there. Someone's reaction and movement is a correlation to their speed, unless you lack common sense.

It's definitely skill. Being skilled at something physical in the NV would obviously mean you can do it faster / more naturally but in real life being dextrous =/= speed. The neurosurgeon isn't going to do his patient in record speed just because he has dextrous ass hands haha

The best examples of dextrous feats would be Bee's 8 Sword Style and Sarada/Sasuke with their shuriken spinning.

Every time I've ever seen dex as a stat(like in rpgs) it's pretty much speed and or evasion

Usually when someone says you have good dexterity it's used in the case of fine motor skills like finger control. In a Naruto aspect I would assume dexterity means ease of casting jutsu as the hands are adept at quick intricate movements.

The Kanji translation has a group meaning. It's a combination of agile and ability, rather the translator stated responsiveness or agility.

Usually someone who can react to certain situations than another person cannot, means that they have better movements.

However, ignoring the movement part of the translation itself would be rocky. Speed is usually generalized as the main stat rather than reaction anyway.

This, anyone remotely aware of RPG stats know this. Also the dexterity stat is commonly associated with characters like Archers, Dual Wield Rogues and of course Ninjas. So indra post is on point.

Also Boruto scored 4 stars out of five in evasiveness which is a contributing factor to the agile/responsiveness translation OD gave.

If you still think that it has nothing to do with movement speed at all then. The reason he scored higher than the rest means his overall reaction/agility is higher.

Although by feats, SM Mitsuki shit stomps.

Ah I see, the game/manga usage of the word is different from the actual english word. Like say how Stamina doesn't always mean actual stamina in video games.

What would Sarada/Bee's skilled techniques come under then? Just skill?

Its often based on which RPG you are playing. Sometimes dexterity gives you running speed, attack speed, or armor penetration.

Talent shouldn't be something measured in stats because it's so interchangeable.

That should be something given via statement in Manga/Data-Volume Book, or Manga feats.

Ironically what you were referring to earlier, had its skill set. Sarada's weapon play is listed under shuriken control or something, with 4 stars. Meaning she's above average.

Killer bee would be the same if they had similar stat explanations. But the original DB calculated their skill based on stregnth, speed, intelligence, and genjutsu.

This version singles out their best abilities and makes it clear what they can and cannot do, thus far.

Althiugh tbh some of the stats are stupid. Like negotiating :lol

So many different definitions. It's still a bit confusing, but I guess I have an idea of what it is/may be now.

Dexterity is the ability to move/act skilfully in a fast and fluid way. In terms of NV, Sasuke's EMS allows him the greatest dexterity in his kenjutsu manoeuvres possible.

There's more examples, but I think that's one of the more clear ones.

Skill + Speed = Dexterity

Thanks for clearing it up.

In a post-War Naruto messiah-led ninja world i'd argue it's actually a very important stat for the next generations of ninja and a really nice added touch.

I've only ever heard it being used for the hands nothing else
