I find it disrespectful. The American Flag is a symbol just like any other countries flag, and as a symbol it holds power, just as words are just a formation of letters on paper and a sound that comes out of your mouth, and hold power. The American Flag represents the beliefs, laws, and freedom on which America is based on. Burning a flag is throwing up a middle finger at those beliefs, laws, and freedoms.

Of course, this should be true for all countries flags and their respective people.

So patriotism is a joke to you?

No, patriotism is crucial to the security of a people.
A delusional, systematically indoctrinated sense of patriotism is another story..

To the people of a country, their flag represents their territory. The reason they are burning the flag is not because they hate their territory, it is because their territory is being ruled by terrorists who have absolutely no loyalty to the people they are supposedly protecting. The people are burning the flag for what it has come to represent. The people who are burning flags love their country and are showing their dissent towards the tyrannical government.

When there are ''patriotic, (far right)'' movements in Europe marching through the streets, waving their flags (which happens rarely) they do so in the face of a foreign or domestic threat to the people themselves. Like sandy-feet immigrants, newly proposed policies that jeopardize the wellbeing of the people, etc. Not for some dumbass pride and feelings (like the north americans) for a flag being desecrated.

That's just your opinion, though. Not everybody hates their government.

So what if they do? If some guy wants to burn a flag that is his property, why should he not be allowed to do so under the law? You can call him a douchebag to his face for doing it, but I do not see why there should be any legal repercussions.
Do like the EU and regulate what materials the flags can be made of. Make it harder to burn the flags, if that is the issue.

Speaking for people from the u.s., if you don't have any dissent towards your government, you're just really ignorant.
But hey, priorities huh. Lets keep demonizing people that burn flags and demand jail time for them. Lets ignore all the attrocities the authorities are responsible of and watch the superbowl.

That's all fine and dandy but a national flag doesn't represent the elected government. Nor a territory only, but symbolizes and represents the country. It's not personal flag of a person or a party. So burning it doesn't show any anger or disagreement towards the government but the country/State itself. If people governing the country are corrupt and not caring about the country or it's people, they are not going to care if you burn it's flag either. So it's a misplaced anger in this case.

Disrespecting a flag was something done by enemy/rival people who would then replace it with their own after putting it down/destroying it- to demoralize the losing side that they are no longer able to keep it up. So such an action is understandable in case, you want a separate/independent nation and rebelling against the country itself or the likes, but it's rightly seen as a disrespect because that's what it is. If you do so while being a citizen of the country or under the protection of it, you can get a prison time or a fine in a lot of countries.

You want to show anger at the government only?- find their party flag or some similar symbol like an effigy.
You want to burn the national flag (vandalize it in some way) go ahead. But you should know what you are doing- there is no way around it.

Sure, burn the flag if you want, just don't do it in front of everyone and ****ing chant about it. Do it inside your house where no one can see you.

>Make it harder to burn the flags, if that is the issue.
Throwing them in jail will send them a message and make it harder for people to do it.

Whatever, dude. Just because you think the govt. is bad, doesn't objectively makes it so. I mean, sure there can be some faults, but no one is perfect.

At bold: Yet the (s)elected government governs the country and the daily lives of its people and others abroad. The actions of the ones in power represent that flag on a grander scale..

And isn't a country just land with borders to claim the 'territory'?..

And it's obvious the ones in power couldn't care less for citizens burning the national flag. The point is that the delusional sense of patriotism is a great distraction for the masses to get angry at the wrong things. This only helps the ones in power. Reminds me of a quote from Morpheus.
'You have to understand. Most people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured and so hopelessly dependent on the system that they will fight to protect it.'
So, no, that's not a misplaced expression of anger. Either way, it wouldn't change a thing and the ones burning the flag are aware of that. Their reason for burning the flag should be clear and has nothing to do with foreign enemies taking over.

P.S.: I don't use the law as grounds for arguments. Something can be illegal yet harmful To none.

I already did. Patriotism.

sigh.. cannot be reasoned with, I see. alright then.

If a citizen burnt their own country's flag, it means that this citizen is saying "This country is led by corrupted people who made things worst for its native citizens.". That's what is telling me. However, what's worst to me than burning the flag is flying a flag upside down. It is more like a wake up call for natives to revolt against a current government.
